I do not want to discredit any system, but I will say like this:

1. for hunting, bolt action, controlled round feed
2. for hunting shotgun, break action, O/U
3. for target, bolt action, push round feed

Very interesting thread. I’ve noticed from some of the answers on this thread and others, that where one grew up in various countries throughout our world, somewhat determines the type of rifle/shotgun action one is comfortable with and uses/has used for taking the majority of game available to them. Again, very interesting?

Had to think about it a little. I've owned and shot so many types.

1) late New Haven Winchester CRF M70
2) original 54 cal US M 1841 rifle with fast 48" twist bore for conical Minie'
3) original 58 cal US M 1863/64 rifle musket for conical Minie'

For me there's the Pre '64 Winchester and then there's everything else. Although my soft spot for model 98's has grown considerably after a couple of lucky auction scores I've had these last couple years.

Looks as if the Blaser system, with straight pull and easy caliber change, is the only possibly worthwhile development in the last century, or so????

I'm not going to put a favorite as despite hunting extensively I've used very little.
90% of my life has been push feed remington 700. Recently changed to a sako ,AV.
My Ruger 35 Whelan is crf but the only one I've used.
Looking forward now to expanding my experience

Gentlemen , due to the nature of this survey , it may not be possible to reply to each and every 1 of you ( like l usually do ) , because l am writing the data down. However , thank you all very much for your input . I will keep the survey open for more opinions until tonight , before l make my final count for my article. I feel so triumphant knowing that l am not alone in loving the Winchester Model 70 action.

This includes those made by Mauser, Winchester, BRNO, Springfield and of course the "custom" actions based on the aforementioned. For a shotgun I prefer Pump actioned firearms again the older models like Remington 870, Winchester Models 12 & 97 and or an Ithaca Model 37. For squirrels and such my Lever Actioned Marlin 39 A has done everything I've asked of it for 65 years.

Those are all very solid choices , Shootist43. But for the purpose of this survey , l suppose that l will have to use your 1st 3 mentioned choices for making the tally .

DG-98 Mauser, Winchester 70 (pre 64), MRC, Kimber...all pretty much the same IMO
PG, non-dangerous, almost any push feed. They have excellent lockup which seems to give a bit more consistent accuracy and don’t torque the bullet/case connection when feeding. IME
Sorry Major for the number, but most are so similar I could use any without a problem. My concern is the reliability of the rifle in hand. I have seen failures in most brands and have fixed or had them fixed (or gotten rid of them!)

Like @USMA84DAB, I assumed you meant hunting actions as well, so feel free to use the three I listed. But my all-time absolute favorite in general is the M14 and I'm very fond of the Lee-Enfield design as well, if you'd like to have any runner-up or general-consideration entries.

You already know mine all too well ! However , let me be a part of this survey as well .
1) French Brevex magnum mauser mechanism ( my all time favorite )
2) Springfield model 1903 mechanism
3) Remington model 700 ( for non dangerous animals )
( I would also list the Winchester model 70 with control round feed configuration . However , save for one rifle , all the model 70 rifles which l had seen in my career were push- feed configuration )
