  • Import of hunting trophies from thousands of endangered and threatened species to be banned - including lions, rhinos, elephants, and polar bears
  • Ban on imports of hunting trophies will be one of toughest in the world and protect nearly 7,000 species
  • Key manifesto commitment as part of a wider UK drive on international conservation
Importing hunting trophies from thousands of endangered and threatened species, including lions, rhinos, elephants, and polar bears, is set to be banned, under new measures announced by Environment Secretary George Eustice today.
The new ban will apply to imports of hunting trophies from endangered and threatened animals into Great Britain, supporting long-term species conservation and protecting some of the world’s most endangered and threatened animals – including the frequently killed ‘Big Five’ (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos).
In the last 50 years, there has been a 60% decline in wildlife globally. This ban will be among the toughest in the world and will protect a range of species including nearly 6,000 animals that are currently threatened by international trade.
The Ban will also cover over 1,000 additional species which are considered near-threatened or worse, such as African buffalo, zebra and reindeer – going further than the Government’s initial manifesto commitment to prohibit the import of hunting trophies from endangered species.
The Government consulted on a ban in 2019 and we received over 44,000 responses which showed clear public and conservation group support for tighter restrictions with 86% supporting further action.

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate. The population of Africana savanna elephants has decreased by more than half in the last 50 years whilst the number of African lions has declined to just 20,000 in the wild in the last 20 years.
Trophy hunting can add to the range of threats that species face and have negative knock-on effects for animal populations or entire ecosystems. Banning trophy imports from these endangered and threatened animals – with no exemptions – will help reduce the threats many of these species are already facing.
The UK Government is at the forefront of international efforts to protect endangered animals and plants and following a recent £7.2m boost, is investing £46m between 2014 and 2021 through its IWTCF to directly combat the illegal wildlife trade to benefit nature, people, the economy and protect global security.
The Government’s world-leading Ivory Act will also come into force next year and will further support conservation measures by introducing a near total ban on the import export and dealing of items containing elephant ivory in the UK, regardless of their age.
Alongside today’s announcement, the measures are part of the Government’s wider plan to reverse biodiversity loss and reinforce our position as a global champion in conservation and animal welfare as set out in our Action Plan for Animal Welfare. The measures will be included in future legislation aimed at raising welfare standards and protections for animals abroad. Further details of this will be forthcoming soon.

Crap…. There goes the neighbourhood…
EU will be next for sure.

Unbelievable twisted bullshit ...yet again these morons proving they have no understanding....

Well that was 10 minutes wasted. What a maroon. Should have stopped after the quote from Goodall, but I still hoped there was something redeeming in the article. There was not.

This is one of those misinformed fools spreading misinformation that we must refute whenever we can. To allow this drivel to go unchallenged just gives it a potential foothold. Pretty obvious the author is drunk on too much koolaid to be swayed, but the audience may still be won with actual facts and substance.
Those who consider our response to this type of bs to be "fear-mongering" seem to want to take the ostrich approach. If we don't get the word out promptly and loudly, this kind of emotional garbage can grow legs and be that much harder to battle. There's truth is the adage that "A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth gets it's shoes on". Kill the lie as quickly as possible, even if you have to do it barefoot.

Whether or not it's relevant a month or so had a customer come on who surprisingly owns land In SA.1400 acres.his quote about wildlife was that for the average black country living person that if the animals have no value and are dangerous or damaging to there lifestyle they will simply make them disappear.as for hunting I've never hunted for trophies but for experience.its been a life's goal to hunt africa.if it survives as a few pictures, memories,or stories I fine .I'm sure this is true for almost all hunters.

Just before Newyears, the Minister Goldsmith said,if he is to be believed said that ' trophy ban is not on the goverment timetable'.

He also said that he wish he could give a date on it ,' but it was not up to him to do that'.

But this do not mean to relax with it,keep pressure up,up and up on them so they are not not working unbothered in peace.

Yeez, one some wish the work advice for public servant that son of Otto von Bismarck said.

There is a real threat of a ban on trophy imports being successful here

There is legislation afoot here to ban the promotion of tourism that 'has a negative impact on wildlife' - read into that what you will

In addition to the above, we face an attack from a number of other directions

Airlines are becoming less inclined to carry firearms from London

Airports less keen to handle them

A potential lead (Pb) in rifle ammunition ban is an example of poor science being used to restrict shooting in general

Fire arms licensing is looking for reasons to revoke ownership

The average UK citizen understands and cares little about the role of hunting in conservation. The majority gut reaction is probably that hunting is an unnecessary cruelty conducted by the posh and rich; and that wild animals should be left alone

Most know and care nothing about the issues of conservation in Africa, but it doesn't stop them from having an opinion

Any Member of Parliament voting for a trophy import ban will not be criticized by their electorates - however, they just might be (by noisy activists) if they go against it

My own MP was not in the least interested in talking to me about these issues - he didn't have the time or inclination to allow a bit of informed opinion interfere with his desire to 'tow the party line'.

Been reading about this and Biden supports the ban, The Left just want to ban every conservative.
All they want is to take every each of our freedom away.

In short, Bots Gov publicly condems the MP after his actions now.
