Hi All
I am looking for a new stock for my 458, Winchester mod 70, super express.
Its got a serious crack through the Magazine plate to the Lug in the side. Any ideas on where to look for a good used one or new. ?

Attached a Photo of the damage.

Looks like a great war wound. I would try to repair it and keep the scar as a memory of where the rifle has been. You can have a gunsmith do it, or try it yourself. If it doesn't come out to your liking you can always get the new stock.

Try pre64win.com. They are top tier for everything having to do with Win Model 70s. Original stocks, parts, barrels, complete rifles, etc.

He's from South Africa. I seem to recall importing gun parts from US is problematic. I suggest repairing it. Bed the back end inside with JB Weld and fill the crack with colored epoxy. The pigments are available online and unlikely to be stolen in the mail. If you are unfamiliar with bedding, come back here for help. Lots of us have done it.

My 03A3 Springfield developed a crack in similar location years ago and I repaired it. If you didn't know it was there, you'd have a hard time seeing it. Here's a photo.

It's held up fine for decades. Of course, a 30-06 is not a 458 magnum. But the repair should hold. Last year I acquired a used stock online for my 404J built on Czech Mauser. Discovered it had two internal cracks starting, one behind the recoil lug and one ahead of the trigger. Not surprising as the gun originally mounted on it was obviously a heavy caliber thumper: wide profile barrel channel and sling swivel at butt only ( = rifle had an African style barrel band forward sling swivel), but the stock had NO reinforcement! My guess is the person who ordered the build for that stock was more into cosmetics than common sense. Anyway, I bedded the action end to end, added Winchester crossbolts, and put a steel rod through the wrist. It's holding up fine.

I strongly suspect your stock cracked because the crossbolt loosened. In warm humid environments wood expands during the wet season and then shrinks again during the dry winter. Check your crossbolts. I'll bet they need tightening.

I have a synthetic stock that I got with my Mod70 that you can use until you get a replacement stock if it is urgent?

and you for your gracious offer, I think I can make it work till season end.

Maybe remove the crossbolt, spread the crack a few MMs, and squirt some Acraglas in there and you may be good to go. Easier said than done, of course.

IF you’re in the USA You could ship or bring the old stock to me and I’ll repair it for you over the course of some weekend.

I’ll share the recipe for the epoxy I would use to fix it if anyone here is curious.

SystemThree topcoat epoxy, mix by weight 100 parts resin to 43 parts hardener, mix until it looks clear as water (minus some bubbles)

sand smooth to 220 or higher and tape off off the low side (for gravity) with scotch clear tape, make sure to press really hard right around the seems to prevent leakage.

I use rockler black epoxy dye, but any black dye works. Mix in small batch and Add dye one drop at a time until the epoxy is jet black. If the cracks are larger I like to add some west systems silica to thicken the epoxy, but for small cracks the system three topcoat is thick enough.

Fill the cracks, checking every few minutes to add a bit more epoxy until it stops soaking it up, let cure 16-24 hours. If there’s more that needs touched up you can use black CA glue, but if a lot need touched up you can make another batch of epoxy.

I have done this truck on my woodworking mallet head which I literally use to beat 4” long .5” diameter dowels into place with on a near daily basis, and it has never shown any sign of taking damage. I’m pretty sure the epoxy is actually stronger than the wood, but also bonds to it really well.

I personally think fixing it with black epoxy would be a really cool looking battle scar, but that’s just me.

After the repair sand the stock until it looks good and put fresh finish on it
