What new Ruger would you like to see in a limited special run?

I want a ruger guide gun in .458 win mag.

Yes this, I even made my own, first on a Ruger .416 Alaskan then on a MKII M77 used a No1 45/70 barrel rechambered so looks the part & Ruger .458Win barrels on the No1 are too heavy !

Also the 338/06 hand loaded gets near factory .338Win with less of the bad stuff, in the SS or African I suppose.

I’d prefer Stainless for the Guide Gun & maybe the Green Laminated stock, without that stupid butt plate/recoil pad set up.

A few days ago, @MontanaGrant started a thread about the Ruger African in 450 Bushmaster that was made exclusively for Randy's Hunting Center in Michigan. This thread eventually devolved into a discussion about what it would take to have a special limited run of rifles made for a group of people (like us!). So I sent RHC an email to ask that question and here is the response I got:

Darryl,

We work very closely with Ruger on exclusive rifles for our company. Generally they require between 75 and 100 firearms (same model and caliber), but we believe that they would run a minimum order of 50 rifles.

Please, let us know which model and caliber you are considering.

Best regards,

Randy’s Hunting Center

So there you have it. We need to specify a Ruger rifle model, a single caliber and 50+ of us would all agree that we would part with the money to make that happen. Is this possible? I don't know but my guess is it could be a challenge to come to a consensus. But I thought I would at least pose the question just because I was personally curious to see what your responses would be.

For the sake of this particular exercise, here's the "rules":

1. If you would buy a Ruger No. 1, specify the calibers you would be willing to purchase. You can get more detailed if you like about stainless, blued, RSI, barrel length, etc. But the main goal is just to see if there is at least one chambering that a significant number of people would purchase. Also keep in mind that at least 49 other people are going to need to agree with you. So while it might be tempting to list something esoteric, you might want to include something with commercially available ammunition on your wishlist as well.

2. If you would buy a Ruger Hawkeye African, specify the calibers you would be willing to purchase. Remember that Ruger magazines for the rifles they have been producing lately are 87mm / 3.4" so specifying the really large African calibers may not be practical. Since I'm a left-handed shooter, if that's what you want, mention that as well. I'm assuming the majority of responders will be right-handers but obviously I'm wondering if there's anyone out there like me.

To get the ball rolling, I'll go first. If this is going to be a special limited run, then I'm not really interested in getting a common chambering that is readily available in current rifles. But that's just my personal feeling:

Ruger No. 1 Tropical: 404 Jeffery

Ruger No. 1 RSI: 303 British

Ruger Hawkeye African (LH): 7x57 / 275 Rigby (my top choice by far!)

But I would also spend money to help my fellow southpaws by purchasing any of the following:

Ruger Hawkeye African (LH): 22 Hornet, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 7x64, 35 Whelen or 9.3x62

So here's your opportunity to put in a request for something missing & to see how that compares with the other forum members. If this thread produces a meaningful number of responses, I'll tally the totals in a later reply. Maybe start a followup thread with a poll if it appears there might be a doable choice. If the response is anemic, then that will satisfy my curiosity as to the feasibility of this endeavor as well. :D

I'd be in for a lefty .458 WM in an M77. I think the stock and barrel profile would need to be beefed up a bit from the African models, and a decent recoil pad from the factory would be a nice change of pace.

At some point I'll probably make my own out of my LH .375 Ruger African or a lefty Model 70 action that I haven't figured out another use for yet.

A .30-06 in the Hawkeye African with a 24" barrel, and/or 7x64.
A Lipsey rep told me the M77 action is not long enough for the H&H's.
If the action would work for a 404J I would also be in.

A No. 1 in 404J. They made a very small run previously, when you see them now they usually cost at least $4000-5000.

About 1.5 years ago, APHA (the Alaska Professional Hunters Association) had a small run of Ruger Guide Guns done in 416 Ruger. It was one of the examples I used when I was exchanging emails with Randy's Hunting Center of a small group of people getting a particular rifle made. I also hate the big adjustable recoil pad on most of the guide guns. I thought the special APHA version below looked nicer.

Lipseys had a run of these several years ago.. maybe 2014 I think? ... you can still find this exact rifle NIB from time to time. I just bought one today off GI listed by Cabelas in La Vista. price higher than i wanted, but.. I couldn't help myself. Back to the main topic.. a 404J in a No. 1 or any dreamy CRF platform gets my vote.

I had seen that Ruger 9.3x62 listed but didn't mention it in the "Good Gun Deals" forum because I had posted a slightly cheaper one a few days earlier (that did not last long!). Yours looked like a really nice rifle. (y)

Ruger #1 in 450 Nitro Express, 26 inch barrel, heavy profile, fixed shallow V rear sight and mercury recoil reducer in the stock. It should weigh 9.5 to 10# to tame some recoil that is fierce in the big caliber #1s.

Ruger 77 Hawkeye African in 458 Win Mag, 23 inch barrel fixed shallow V rear sight,
double recoil lugs Devcon bedded, recoil reducer in stock, 1 inch recoil pad, weigh at least 8.75 pounds.
I like the first idea 450 Nitro Express, the original standard. Cheap bullets for practice.

338-06 AI in a model 77 (not African) I would scope it and shoot with a can. I would buy the first one! I have a model 77 in 338WM. Also have a M70 with a 22in proof barrel in 338.06AI. With my hand loads the 338-06AI performance is on par with the 338WM as far as velocity. The 338-06AI shoots better groups.

And I would buy the second one.

Ruger guide gun in 375 H&H, 458 win mag.
Most common cartridges for DG safari in the world.

A left handed Hawkeye African in 30-06
Do another run of the left handed Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger.
A left handed 458 Win Mag.

Ruger No.1 C weight barrel chamber in 30-06 or 300 WM or even a 7X57 or 275 Rigby with the mid weight barrel.
