Want To Buy Right Handed 404 Jeffries Rifle

Sierraone, Port Huron is just up the road apiece. I'll give Mark a call and see what he has to say. Thanks for the "tip."
Good Luck, I never imported through Mark, but did export through him to an Australian, who paid all the costs.

Sierraone, I used to live about three miles from Mark. I met my lifetime hunting partner while living there. I sent him an email with my contact information. I'll post whatever info I find out.

@Shootist43 ,

Look forward to what you find out as I too am interested what the exact costs would be to do this.

Please keep the information coming , it would be possible to enable us to sell 404 Jeffery and 8x68S hunting rifles in the USA ..(y)

Gert, reedy0312 and Sierraone, I just got off the phone with Mark Berger a somewhat local Firearms Importer/Exporter.
I'm afraid the news is all bad. Sporterized firearms built on a Military action are prohibited from importation. Old Military Rifles can be imported providing they qualify as a Curios and Relic. To satisfy this condition the firearm must be in its' original configuration. In other words not Sporterized. Hunting rifles may be imported providing they have a "Commercial" action. I'd like to add that Mark was very sympathetic and took the time to locate the actual language preventing the importation.

Shootist43, it is sad news indeed...will you be so kind as to ask if I will be able to sell the bottom metal/trigger guard and magnum magazine box to hunters in the USA. Here is an example..this set up will change a standard Mauser action into a converted magnum action...

Will it also be possible to sell a cast double square bridge magnum action in the USA , shipped from South Africa??
I really would like to hear his answer in this regards..(y)(y)(y)

There is a Remington 700 XCR in 404 Jeffery on guns international for $2000. Not sure if that would be of your liking. Good luck in your search. I like that caliber myself!

Hello all! Well, because of this post I decided to call up the folks with that rifle, we talked back and forth and it will soon be at a FFL near me! Remington model 700 XCR II Custom .404J with a Zeiss Conquest 1.8 x 5.5 scope. Apparently it started life out as a 338 Lapua. I think I'm going to need to replace the stock because right now, according to the seller, it weighs in at a whopping 8lbs 2 oz which seems like it might be a bit light to me. Probably going to order a stock through Boyds unless anyone knows another site. Thank you all for the help!

I hope it works well for you. I've been very pleased with mine. I did replace the synthetic stock with a Remington laminated stock, added about 1 lbs. A 11oz mercury reducer in the stock and a Limb Saver sporting clay recoil pad. Reduced recoil greatly and proves to be very accurate with Woodleigh RN bullets. Just shy of 2400pfs and an unbelievable reload amount with Federal brass. I lost track but somewhere in the plus 12 times reloaded, same four pieces. Most of which have been in the 2300fps and above range.

Thank you for the heads up! I've been thinking of getting into reloading for years and my wife and I finally threw out all the old brass about 2 months ago because we agreed that if it hadn't happened in all these years it probably never will. Que the 404 bullets at $80-$109 a box and we had a long chat about me buying some equipment to try and start reloading. Any info on it would be appreciated, I have a very limited idea of what I would need.

Also I did end up getting a Boyds stock, I went for the highest quality walnut they had because I figured a 404J deserves to be in something nice. I'll post pictures after I get it all in, probably going to take it to a local gun smith and install another recoil lug and maybe some additional weight.

If Boyd’s can add a 3/4” x 5” hole in the stock for the mercury reducer that would be a huge recoil helper. I ordered mine from Brownells for $45.85 plus shipping (PN# 163-000-004AT). Easy to install, just drop it snugly behind the recoil pad. I did add a little bananza gold to the lettering. To add a little “extra” to the receiver.

As for reload data I haven’t found much except on this site. Found two more today. I have been using IMR4350 and started at 80 grs and slowly worked up to 86.5 then backed it down to 86 even. With 400gr Woodleigh RN and Hawk FMJ and SP they were moving at 2398fps. Federal nickel brass and Federal magnum primers. This of course could be way different then your gun so use caution.

Here is the thread I found today from other members. https://www.africahunting.com/threads/404-jeffery-400grs-a-frame-reload-data.42651/

I should also note as far as bullet performance on game there are far more experience from other members. I have not used the 404 on game as of yet.

I dont think you will have trouble with your bottom metal.. in the US, the action or receiver of a rifle is considered to be the "firearm".. everything else is just a component or part..

If youre dealing with an action, or a finished rifle, you will have all sorts of regulations and import restrictions to deal with.. but if youre talking components like bottom metal, barrels, triggers, stocks, etc.. it should be as easy as putting the part in the mail and shipping it..

Regarding your double square bridge actions.. if they are of new manufacture, you should be able to get an import license for them.. you would need to work through someone in the US that is a licensed firearms dealer (holds an FFL) and that knows how to complete the import paperwork.. this wont be cheap.. so it could make your action cost prohibitive and not very appealing to the US market.. but I think its probably worth at least looking into..

mdwest, thank you kindly for the reply it is much appreciated...(y) At this stage I am focusing on the conversion option , I think it make more sense to start with this item since it is a practical manner to upgrade your standard action to a magnum action, the person already have a rifle with a standard Mauser action , all rules /regulations are adhere to already..he only needs a new barrel if he chooses to use the same barrel profile.
I want to specialise in conversion of the Mauser action...(y)(y)

Re. reloading for the 404 Jeffery. I look at it this way, assuming you already own the press, once the dies and brass are purchased you sort of forget about those fixed costs. Your ongoing expenses are powder, bullets and primers. I recently did the math and figured out that I can load 404s with Swift A Frames for about $2.00 a shot vs $8.00 for factory stuff. Besides the saving it is the satisfaction you get from taking game with your "own" ammo. Being retired, the hours I spend reloading help fill my day especially during the Michigan winter.

Ah that makes good sense, thank you for the perspective!

Here's some pics of my CZ.

Action Bob, did your CZ 550 in 404 Jeffery feed right out of the box? Mine was built by their Custom Shop in 2006 and supposedly had Action work as well as the Fancy wood. It does not feed anywhere near reliably. I was able to cycle through 2 out of 8 or possibly more magazine loads without a hitch. Is my best and maybe only recourse to send the rifle off to Wayne at AHR?

Wayne worked on my Ruger RSM in .458 Lott - had some feeding issues, and I had him bed it, gunkoke it, install a new site, jewel the bolt, etc. I can attest that his work is absolutely fantastic. He currently has my CZ in .375 H&H for a #3 upgrade as I write this. Haven't gotten it back yet - but it jammed often and fed terribly before I sent it. I have no doubt it will be smooth as glass when I get it back.
