Hello all you fine hunters! So, as you may or may not know (and if you don't go look at the hunting report for a laugh) I returned from my first Africa experience last year and I took my CZ-550 .375. Oh man, what a rifle! I had a grand old time but after firing and using the CZ I came down with an odd malady unique to Hunters in Africa...I want something a bit bigger for when I try my hand at dangerous game. Unfortunately my efforts to find one used have proven less than fruitful...to be frank I think someone salted the fields, bought them all and has been keeping them hidden away! So, here is what I'm asking: I'd like to see if anyone here is selling a right handed 404 Jeffrey that is in good working order. I don't care if it's a project gun, as long as it works, shoots well and is within a reasonable price. For comparison I got hold of CZ, and a new one, starting, is around $3.5k. Until I win the lottery that's simply outside of what I can swing, and if I did swing it my wife would swing at me!
So, thank you for reading this and listening, I know the odds are long but hey, you miss one hundred percent of the shots you never take, right?

    Thank you all!

I know what your feeling. Bought a .375 H&h. Then went to the double rifle. Kreighoff 500/416. And I am now on a blazer s2 in 500 ne. Good luck it is not easy to break the disease.

    I want one too!!!!

Been looking everywhere and cant find one. the only way I have seen to get one is through CZ's custom shop, but that route is $3500++ like you mentioned. I wish they made one in the "standard" option

Send Gert Odendall a PM, maybe his Gunsmithing buddy can help you.

Ah, see, I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a double and because of some bad decisions in my past (many, many motorcycle wrecks at high speeds) I don't think I'll ever own anything bigger lol. I tried a 500 once....that was fun, but there is no way I'd trust myself for a follow up shot so I can't hunt with it heh.

I know! I just want a standard, I don't need super walnut stock with ivory rings and a pop up sight made from the fingure bone of St. Hubertus (patron saint of hunting) himself heh.

Do you happen to know his profile name? I looked around but couldn't find a "Gert Odendall" but I admit I may be doing something wrong. Thank you again for the help!

If I would get on with my Ruger RSM 404 project, I'de probably sell my CZ;) But not likely to happen soon enough for you...

This site is probably the best place to hunt for a .404J used. But they are rare to be for sale. I would think that you will not ever find one much for less than $3000. As mentioned above Gert Odendaal can advise you how to get a new one from South Africa for around $2000 or a little more. But then you have to import it. That my friend will cost you at least $1000 and quite possibly a lot more, so you are back to $3000 and more. .404J rifles have become extremely popular during the five years I have been on this forum. Conversions are a common way many members have "found" their .404s, But again, unless you are little bit gunsmith and do a lot of the work yourself, you are still going to pay around $3000 or more in the end. And by the way if you wanted an original Jeffery, you're looking at around $10,000 to $35,000! I know because I have looked!

The hunt for the new rifle is as much fun as the next hunt. Good luck finding what your after. Patience and frequent searches of broker websites will help you find the right rifle for you.

Did Cody ever find/buy a .404? I know he has mentioned it before, but I don't think he ever found one.

At $3000 I might have to think seriously about selling mine:unsure:

Problem is I might prefer having the gun rather than the money right now:rolleyes: I tend to look at my guns as money in the bank:)

I know what you mean. I don't think $3000 would even evoke any interest on my part to sell my .404. Maybe $4000 when I get back from Africa in July. Not even sure about that. It is just a Bad A... rifle, even with me shooting it!

I recently started a 404 Jeff conversion project. I asked AH members for input and the consistent advice from several was to get a Winchester M70 or a CZ550 for a donor rifle. The best bet was get a M70 in one of the RUM cartridges, which use the 404 J as the parent cartridge. M70s in RUM are few and far between, but a Super Grade came up on GB and I bought if for a little over $1k. Next, I contacted a few gunsmiths and got turned down by a couple (Hill Country Rifle & AHR), both citing the difficulty in getting a smooth, consistent and perfect feed needed in a DG rifle. Dennis Olson in Montana said he could do it, so I shipped the rifle to him and also ordered a Krieger barrel. The delivery on the barrel is 5 months, so by mid-year Dennis should have it and I might get the finished rifle by year end. Total cost should be just under $3k, using the Super Grades factory stock (very nice wood) and before scoping the rifle.

    I
find it hard to believe it would be difficult to get a 300 RUM action to feed 404 Jeffery cartridges.

On this very website I found the “unicorn”. A LEFT handed .404J. A fellow member had it barreled from a Remington 700 RUM donor rifle. I picked up a better stock from another form and will install a limbsaver recoil pad, Mercury recoil reducer, and then send it off to Mag-na Port. So far it shoots like a dream and the brass just keeps going. Somewhere around 12 times reloaded with very little trimming. 2400fps with 400gr Woodleigh RN shoots 1MOA.
    Good luck in the hunt
