Have you considered the RCR? I prefer a closed emitter when really exposed to the elements. I’ve had debris and mud collect in the RMR and SRO which can block the emitter. If not, I like the SROs larger window while hunting. By design, the RMR is more durable although I haven’t heard of SROs failing.
There is a lot of discussion about using a riflescope on a dangerous game rifle (DGR) for close shooting. The options are instead using metallic sights, or a red dot reflex sight. The following are my observations based on substantial shooting experience and a couple trips to Africa. I am still learning Africa hunting but will share what I've learned about optics.
I have Trijicon SROs and RMR models mounted a third of the way down the barrels of doubles and a bolt action rifle. These are exponentially better than metallic sights for anyone who needs reading glasses. I remember Jack...
I do however love Aimpoint H1 and the newer H2.
I think these are great sights and while bigger than an RMR or RCR, are much smaller than an SRO!
The RMR by design is more robost and should take some "bangs" better than SRO due to the intentional shape. The SRO is nice in that it has a larger window.
On a night stand pistol I hade a little more difficulty deciding but for my 458 it was easy to choose the RMR.
My opinion is that lined up on a stock the dot is so easy to find on the RMR that the SRO's larger window is not much if any advantage at all. On a pistol, the dot is easier to find on the SRO.
Dangerous game rifle - RMR
Combat/Carry/Duty pistol - RMR
Recreational/Non-carry pistol - Personal preference
Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx
I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
