Personally i would rather search for a new .375 H&H. The other two calibre's are great but i think the .375 is the one to go for.

so @Petrus Geldenhuys i take it you are not a discerning member of the exclusive 9.3x62 or 9.3x74r club? as you are showing a distinct lack of imagination and class by bringing up that common .375 H&H thing...............:E Shake Head:..........:A Stirring::A Sting:........;):A Yeah::E Big Grin:

Lack of imagination and Class has nothing to do with my love for the .375 H&H
But while you are stirring the pot... why not the 375?

petrus if i could only have one rifle i own at the moment it would be my 9.3x74r double. if i didnt have any and was told to go buy one and only one it would be a .416 rigby ., or poss a .404 but havent had a chance to use mine yet, so being that a .416 rigby was my first "bigger" cal at the moment that would be it :)

If I could only have ONE rifle to cover both DG and PG, yes, the .375 for sure. If only for PG, its unnecessarily powerful, and possessed of too much recoil for most shooting. If only one rifle for all PG, I would probably choose one of the .300 mags or perhaps the .338 Win mag. But again, the .06 will handle 95 percent of what needs doing on PG.

I agree with Mike.
The choice of caliber rifle is an individual decision of each hunter.
I think that cal. 9,3 x 62 is better than 375H&H.

lets just agree to disagree but if the FEO in the UK would let me shoot deer with a .416 I could be persuaded. But we both know thats never going to happen, it took me 6 months to get cleared for the 375!!

Hi guys.
Cal. 9,3x62 was the inspiration for the English 375 H&H, which eventualy repleced the 9,3. I think superiority 375H&H over 9,3x62 is more impressive on paper than in the bush. Domination 375H&H over 9,3x62 had more to do with wars, ban production of weapons and ammunition, seizure of the german colonies than with better ballistic performance. Cal. 9,3x62 slowly but steadily recovering its place among calibers used for dangerous game hunting in Africa.
Personally, I prefer 9,3x62 due to better penetration of the bullet and less recoil.

What will you be aiming at? If DG is excluded, I would look at the 300H&H Magnum or 338 Win Magnum. If recoil is not your thing, get the 300H&H. My wife has one and she has taken just about anything below the DG category with it; Kudu, Oryx, Impala, Warthog, BWB, all with single shot kills. Distances 50-300 meters.

If you don't mind a bit of recoil, get the 338WM, it can also be used to take everything below DG. I shoot it and it has not let me down yet.

If your sights are on DG as well, then 375H&H would be the minimum calibre for SA. If memory serves me right and you hunt Namibia, they only have an energy restriction on DG of something like 3 980 ft-lbs. If you have a VERY HOT loaded 338WM 300 grainer or a 338 Lapua Magnum, you should be good to go :)

However, just because 375H&H is minimum calibre for DG, it should not necessarily be the go-to calibre. There is much to say for knocking a charging buffalo on his ass with a 416 Rigby.

Most important, pick the calibre that you are comfortable with. Can handle really well and shoot accurately. If you are comfy with the HOWA dirty-ol'-six and DG is not on your list, take the -06, it is more than sufficient for anything you would come across in SA (except DG), especially bush hunting where you would be lucky to get a 250 meter shot in. Most shots will be 40-160 meters. If you will also be doing some plains shooting (as you have mentioned), the 300H&H Magnum or 338WM should serve you well. My Father in Law is a one gun man and has taken a Kudu at 450 meters with the -06. So even the -06 will be more than adequate for plains shooting.

I like both the 9.3 & 375 H&H (I have both calibres). Recoil from either is more of a "push" than 'thump" on the shoulder. I do believe though that the 375 would have a bit of an edge over the 9.3 but not by much. Much can also be said of the 8x68S (I have this calibre also and it's awesome). Basically a 338WM without the ouch! (I have this calibre also :)) Anyone sensing a theme here?
I have the 8mm remington magnum and the 8x68s love them both .....However for one gun the 9.3 as ammo available locally and indeed factory is quite reasonable .....

Just my 2kr worth .......However with recent depreciation of the currency my opinion isn't worth much

Hello Milan, I just watched your video on disassembling/reassembling the CZ 550. I have spent days looking for something like this. I now have no reservations taking apart my rifle. I like to do this with all my guns so I understand them "inside and out". Thank you very much for the information. It is greatly appreciated.
