The Best Hunting Area in Africa

Niassa game reserve along Lugenda River has lots of everything tinies to buff, eland with excellent horn size . Saw more buff in Selous but everything else not nearly as much except for wildebeest. Can’t justify the cost of Masailand and Kasanso Busanga GMA in Zambia but they hold serious trophy game. When they give me 3 months to live “gone there”.

I’ve hunted Luangwa, Kafue, and a reserve in Northwestern Province in Zambia, Save Conservancy and a few ranch areas in Zimbabwe, Maasailand in Tanzania, and a game ranch in SA and I’ve been to photo areas in other parts of SA, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia. So many other places I’d like to go see and hunt but I can’t get my self to go anywhere else but Zambia. I’m way biased now on this topic but the Luangwa River Valley hunting areas around the two big parks - especially the more north you go - is what most people dream of for a wilderness safari experience like the days of old . Granted that I’m biased on this area of Africa but I traveled around before we put a stake in the ground on areas we wanted to offer safari packages. Some of the prime hunting concessions in Luangwa are the only places across Africa where one can hunt the big 4 out of one camp with a high certainty of success for all 4. No bouncing around from area to area - just wake up and go hunting. The game numbers are really good in most of the prime areas in Zambia - and it’s like you are constantly seeing animals - and you know you are in the deep wilds of Africa every night you are laying in your tent listening to the calls of the wild.

Definitely not an easy place to travel or hunt compared to other locations throughout Africa but a very enjoyable and satisfying safari in afterthought. I hope to return.

I would love to go jungle hunting, but pricing makes it impossible for me. That is the main prohibitive factor for me.

Bongo hunting does not interest me. I am trying for years to find a hunting opportunity for forest buffalo, especially in Cameroon and Congo, for a price comparable to a buffalo hunt in Zimbabwe or Mozambique, for example. I have contacted several French outfitters about this. There are not a lot of areas for more or less successful forest buffalo hunting and the prices, including additional costs, are rather comparable with a Bongo hunt.

1. The places I haven't been to yet.

2. The places I can't afford.

Probably depends on what kind of game you're pursuing. You hear amazing things about the Sealous in Tanzania, the Delta in Batswana, Matesi in Zimbabwe, Karamoja in Uganda, Niassa in Mozambique etc. I decent side not, the most interesting hunt report I have seen on this website was entitled "The Bongo in the Congo" - that is worth checking out

Best area? Hah! Human nature dictates recommendations/justifications are usually based on most money spent….

Like Hunter-Habib, decades ago I hunted the Ugalla area in Tanzania and found it most enjoyable. I was lucky to Hunt the beautiful Bangui Lake area which I understand has been closed to hunting. .the photo of the croc in my media was taken in the Ugalla

Defining what you define as best, “ best “, is the tricky part. Environment and beauty of area are important to me. Amount of animals and their type are obviously important too. Adventure in Mongolia, Cameroon, and C.A.R define hunting as a way of life not a pastime.

Best Area? For me, is where I’m scheduled to go next. That means;
2025: Zambia, followed by the Okavango Delta
2026: Coutada 11 in Mozambique


Future Destination I’m considering
Zambezi Valley (I’ve hunted the Motopos and Matetsi areas)
Mult. areas in Tanzania (Maasailand is up there)
CAR/Cameroon/Congo (Jungle Hunt)
Niassa Reserve in Mozambique
Kalahari or Tuli area of Botswana
Uganda
Ethiopia (Mtn Nyala is the dream)
