Survey: Your Favorite .30 Caliber

Even though I don't own one right now, '06 all the way.
IF I had to have just one rifle for everything. The 30-06 would be my choice.

If I had to have one rifle for everything it would be my Whelen.

With no regard for the redundancy of practical answers, my personal favorite is the .300 Ruger compact magnum. I’m smitten with the rifle I have chambered in .300 rcm and the round has served me well, as any great .30 cal should.

.30-06 for me. I also own .300 WSM, Win Mag, and Weatheby Mag, so I guess I’m just a .308 cal fan!!

Years ago I would have said the .300 H&H because it's a hell of a cool cartridge. Now, in my more mature years, I realize that the .30-06 is one of perhaps three or four absolutely perfect cartridges in the history of centerfire rifles.

So perfect, in fact, that it spawned plenty other great cartridges, among which the one so dear to @Bob Nelson 35Whelen

Full disclosure: I don't own a sporting rifle in this chambering, but if I had to have a .30 caliber bolt, there wouldn't even be a moment's hesitation.

My first rifle was a .30-06. For about 10 years I used it for everything from prairie dogs to elk.

Then after moving from Colorado to Montana, my new hunting partner gave me a .30 Gibbs case. I thought that Gibbs case was the coolest looking case ever, and after carrying it around for a couple of months, I had my .30-06 re-chambered to .30 Gibbs. That was my favorite hunting rifle for about 10 years.

Ever since I first started big game hunting in the mid '60s I've admired Weatherby rifles, and especially the .300 Wby cartridge. Finally, in 2009 I bought my first Weatherby rifle, a Vanguard chambered in .300 Wby. I put the barrel and action in a AA Fancy walnut stock, hand checkered it with my favorite multi-panel, wrap a round pattern, and some other modifications, and it quickly became my new favorite rifle.

I've hunted elk with it here in Montana, exotics in Texas, Red stag etc in New Zealand, multiple hunts in Mozambique and South Africa, and Dagestan Tur in Azerbaijan.

My favorite .30 caliber rifle, my .300 Weatherby

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
