Suppressing a .375?

@Daisy the Raptor 8 is around 8 inches long. You state you’re using a 5”reflex. Does that mean the suppressor only adds 3 inches to the barrels overall length?
The raptor 8 adds exactly 6” to the length of the barrel. (The 8 in the name is the number of baffles rather than the length.

Well, my choices may get changed down the road, but I wanted a 375 that I could shoot on PG and perhaps one day on a buff. I snagged a Christensen Evoke in 375h&h for $700 NIB. (I have not shot it yet and I know some Christensen rifles have issues… I had one that did but they promptly fixed it and now it is a hammer.)
I got an AB raptor 8 with 5” reflex. The can weighs 14oz as it sits and adds 6” to the 22” barrel. The weight of the rifle is 9.5#
Hope to shoot it soon!

I admit it has that tacticool look which is clearly a thing, but a 28" barreled dangerous game rifle ..................... Why on earth encumber yourself with that in the thick stuff trying to walk down a buffalo - or anything else on four legs for that matter.

For now, we will call it an experiment… I can always shoot it unsupressed as well. I ran a few rounds through it after church today and it is surprisingly tame to shoot.

I contacted Ruger about replacing my non threaded Alaskan barrel with a threaded barrel, was told will only replace with whatever it was originally equipped with. I don’t want to lose the front banded sight, local gunsmith did not want to touch it, suggested Briley in Houston. Any thoughts?
Maybe Gordy & Sons????

After failing to find anyone locally, I used Silencer Central for two of my barrels. You can give them specific instructions on how to handle your sights etc. They have a dedicated team and and thread 15-20 barrels a day. Shipping was a breeze. They also mounted and timed 3 port ASR brakes on both.

I contacted Southpaw, the response was that with the barrel taper it was not possible to relocate the banded sight back to allow threading. I had previously identified an owner who had done precisely that to the same rifle, the shop he used was no longer in business. I will continue my search.
But surely they are setting the barrel up in the lathe to take it down to the correct diameter for threading ? It would be a simple task to simply turn down the barrel for the sight ? Just a little step that might leave a shoulder but the sight barrel band will cover it up ? I guess it is different for a reflex suppressor but doesn’t seem insurmountable to me. Just measure the diameter of the banded sight and turn the barrel for that diameter.

Just got back from a recent hunt in RSA. My first ever. Used my Winchester M70 in .375 H&H with a Bowers Group VERS 375 suppressor shooting factory Barnes 300 grain TSXs. I absolutely LOVED IT!!! Yes, it's awesome dropping the recoil down as well as the hearing levels. You know what else is really nice? Hearing that thump of the bullet every single time you pull the trigger and knowing you had a good hit. I shot suppressed for years with my old job and it was a necessity. Now doing it for hunting, it's so dang nice. And it really doesn't throw off the gun that much. Especially if you're up on sticks. All 3 of my guns on the trip were suppressed. I'll go suppressed every time over not if I have the opportunity.

Sorry just saw this. No the reflex is separate from the actual suppressor. It is 6.3 inches long, but because of threads it doesn’t add that much length probably a little less than 6 inches length.

On a 20” barrel on a Blaser r8, that is equivalent to a 17” regular barrel. So a little less than 23” barrel length equivalent on a regular rifle.

The people that routinely tote a 23” rifle for dangerous game, then say adding a suppressor makes it unwieldy, are being disingenuous.

Why on earth would you have a 28” rifle? Again that is made up.

I would be careful throwing around terms like "made up."

@Nicaburns suggested he was adding a 6" suppressor to to a 22" barrel. Now I admit I was a liberal arts major, but I am fairly certain 6 plus 22 equals 28. Though I would certainly agree, in what world would anyone hunt anything, much less dangerous game, with the resulting 28 inch rifle.

Unless you are making up your math.

I would NOT do it on any rifle I would be using for Dangerous game hunting! You're better off buying Game ears that magnify sound and then actually protect your hearing from gunshots! I have not seen a suppressor yet that actually takes the sound down to hearing safe levels when using high velocity ammunition. Even with a suppressor You're doing hearing damage. You just can't get around the fact that when the bullet breaks the sound barrier is going to do hearing damage.
I've been shooting suppressed weapons for over 20 years and can tell you there great on some weapons and a real pain on others.

You seem to like calling people liars don't you.

I absolutely believe adding a suppressor to a 23" barrel makes a rifle unwieldy.

Again, these are my actual experiences, not musings, with just such a setup in Hungary a little over a year ago that I posted on the first page. It was an aggravating combination for stalking game. I can't imagine trying it with free range buffalo.

I’ve got a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 with the brake cap that moves around on a number of my rifles. Have run it on my Ruger Guide 375R with no problems. It’s infinitely better than shooting with the brake on the rifle, and much better than shooting with nothing on the rifle. Doesn’t really impact handling very much as I carry it in my vest when hiking. The ASR mount enables you to put it on, and quietly, in a matter of seconds.

I don’t use that rifle much anymore since moving to a more traditional WR 375HH which isn’t threaded. That said, that suppressor does everything from 6mm and up when I need it to.

You would seriously contemplate manipulating a suppressor onto a rifle in the presence of cape buffalo or elephant? Even if you and your PH somehow workout signals for you to mount it before actually closing with a bull, then you have the issue of longer length in the final approach when trying to be quietest and find a shooting lane.

Why do you care if others use a suppressor? No one is making you.

In 48 years of hunting I have yet to hear the report of a rifle I squeezed the trigger on on a big/dangerous game take.
Your barrel isn’t short enough! I have a relatively short barreled 375. It’ll make your left ear ring for sure. I don’t think a suppressor should be considered for dangerous game hunting though. Maybe a spot and stalk farm hunt in south Africa if using a suppressor is most important part of hunt to someone, but not a hard tracking hunt in a wild area.

Leopard blind might be nice too, but it’s illegal (or gray area) in most African countries outside South Africa and Namibia.
