Ruger Safari Magnum vs Kimber Caprivi

I am looking at getting a new .375 H&H soon. Trying to keep my cost of rifle with optics under $5k. Does anybody have input in choosing between these 2 rifles? Are there any special considerations I should keep in mind?

Between those choices I would go Caprivi in a .375. The RSM can be a fine rifle but is better chambered in .416 or .458, an overly large and heavy rifle for .375 in my opinion.

I would get my hands on both of them and see what I liked.

The RSM is a fatty, but man does it shoot nice.

I don't know about the Kimber but the RSM's have been discontinued for some time now so you would be looking at a used one. They are going for roughly $3k now.

Kimber doesn’t list the Caprivi in its online catalog. I’m afraid it has also gone out of production.

I have two….one in 375 H&H and another in 458 Lott. I like both of them a lot. IMO, the 375 is a bit on the heavy side and the Lott was way too light as it came from the factory. I suppose that’s the problem using the same barreled action for two distinctly different calibers. All that said, I’d buy the 375 again. It’s wonderfully smooth and accurate. Good looking too.

There are also New York Kimber 89's in 375. Sometimes you will see a second hand one in good shape for sale. They are almost direct sized M70 clones.

If you can get one that has not been abused that would be a good option.

Spend some time on guns unlimited looking for 375's. there will be a ton of options.

Try your local Cabelas and see what they have, maybe order a couple off their website to your store and try that.

I have a Kimber Caprivi in 375H&H and 416 Remington. Very nice rifles, great shooters.
The 375 has a new Swarovski Z8I, 1x8 power on it. I would consider taking $5000 for the 375 with scope, also it is threaded for suppressor or brake and has a thread protector cap.

My Dad and I have the Ruger M77 RSM in .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, and .458 Lott. The 375 in the RSM will weigh around 10lbs unloaded with no scope. Most people consider that on the heavy side for a 375 however it will make it feel about like shooting a 30-06 in a standard deer rifle. Very shootable. The Ruger RSM has some really nice features that you do not see on some custom rifles like a quarter rib for example. For the money, I think you get the most out of a Ruger RSM, but those features are not the most important in a hunting rifle. I have not shot the Kimber, but have heard they are well made. I would try and feel both before purchasing, or even better buy both as an investment. Sell the one you like the least for probably more than you paid for it.

I totally agree about the weight and balance of the 375 RSM. I knew this before getting one but was hooked on what to me is a classic Safari rifle. I ended up putting another $2k in custom work into it and ended up with a too heavy 375 that shoots like a dream.

Ive owned both, the RSM is built like a tank and the Kimber is lighter with some nice features like glass bedding. You can't go wrong with either, if you prefer a bigger heavier rifle go with the RSM, if you prefer a rifle thats a little lighter and classier go with the Kimber.

Classier? Well ok, Kimber is not as clunky but that's just wood; take that away and the Kimber is just another rifle. Nice functioning for sure (so I've heard) but the RSM, as heavy as it is. is just traditionally classy and a great shooter, but that's just my opinion.

I enjoy Ruger rifles and own several. I really wanted to like the RSM but it's just too heavy in 375 for my taste.

I really like the weight and looks of Kimber 375s. I love the standard magnum decelerator pads they put on these rifles. The Kimber stock design in very effective in mitigating felt recoil.
The Kimber Caprivi is a little lighter than the Model 70 Safari. The Talkeetna is quite a bit lighter.

Im a fan of both Ruger and Kimber in general and have owned a lot of their firearms over the years ranging from .22 pistols to medium bore rifles..

That said, Ive personally had great luck with Kimber rifles.. every one of them Ive ever owned worked flawlessly and shot with exceptional accuracy.. My wife now only shoots kimber bolt action hunting rifles (she shoots other manufacturers in semi autos, doubles, etc).. Ive got absolute faith in them..

So.. for me.. the choice would be the caprivi.. not because the ruger is a bad choice (it absolutely is not a bad choice at all)... Kimber is simply the preference (and as others have noted, the RSM is a great rifle, but is a bit of a pig in 375...)..
