Rimmed (only) Versatility

As much as I like the less known but frequently nicer Drilling/Double makers like Peter Hoffer etc. and whilst I know that these individuals could make "basically anything" my budget isn't in the hundreds & thousands... which is practically always the case with these type of gunsmiths that make one offs.

Krieghoff, Blaser, Merkel are marketed more towards people whom aren't princes/maharajas etc.

Blaser got "shot in foot" when they said they don't do D99 Trios anymore.

I'm starting to lean more on...

All Rounder: 5.6x52R + 7x57R + 9.3x74R.

DG: 2x .375 Flgd Mag but struggle to think of what best for remaining barrel I am thinking 9.3x74R but with a round & load half that of the .375 Flgd Mag., undecided.

Krieghoff can do the above 2 configurations from their standard Optima Drilling Range.

Kharn, Since I've never had the opportunity to own a drilling, could you tell me what your 5.6x52R-7x57R-9.3x74R weigh? Thanks

I do not have one yet, I've sold all my gear to have one but... Krieghoff state "Approximately 8 1/2 lbs depending on wood density and caliber" (not inc. barrel insert for the 5.6x52R).

Black fly, bit of an old thread, but are any of your O/U doubles scoped, and if so which barrel do you zero to?

Most O/U are regulated front trigger lower barrel first shot..... rear trigger, upper barrel second shot, should shoot to the same point of impact.

Since MK mentioned the .405 Winchester, here is what I shoot in mine:

Winchester 1895 .405 :
Hornady 210 grain hand load
Hornady factory 300 grain + plus Barnes, NF, Woodie, etc handloads
Hornady and Woodleigh 400 grain hand loads

Sinson Suhl .405 double rifle
300 grain Hormady factory and hand loads
400 grain Hornady and Woodleigh

Plenty of variety for me.

You can get full length insert barrels in a number of different calibers. There are several manufacturers. I think Zimmerman and Kreighoff make them. There are also shorter inserts, about 12 and 15 inches made for 22 LR and 22WRM.
I have a full length insert in 5.6x50R in my Sauer Lux (7x57R and 16/16) that is a real tack driver. The 5.6x50R was developed as a roe deer cartridge. It is about like a 222 magnum and is sudden death on turkeys, groundhogs and coyotes. I also have the shorter 12 inch in 22WRM that stays pretty close to an inch at 75 yards. That one is great for small game.
The full length inserts do need a gunsmith to fit them and they are not cheap, but they make a drilling unbelievably versatile.

Would it be possible to commission a tube to make a cape gun in 45-70x12gauge into a 45-70 gouble rifle? Do the offer a way to regulate the tube ?

Or you could just shop around for a good used .45-70 double rifle like this Beretta of mine:

Or, you could buy a rifled barrel insert like I put in my Savage 24 Turkey gun; .22 Hornet over 12 gauge.
The 45-70 barrel is 18 inches long and partially suppressed by the longer shotgun barrel.

I wonder if the OP managed to find a solution?

I think of the BD14, with a barrel set made to his wishes.

It’s the only Blaser that appeals to me, in a very different setup, but I can see that his combination might work in it.
