Does anyone know why these Governors are in Davos? Who is paying for them to travel and posture ?

  • Gretchen Whitmer (Governor of Michigan)
  • Andy Beshear (Governor of Kentucky)
  • Kevin Stitt (Governor of Oklahoma)
  • Gavin Newsom
I'm betting they're all skiers. Switzerland is a beautiful country even in the winter. I guess governors are entitled to holidays too. If they can mix business with pleasure, why not? What business could they possibly have at that meeting? Who knows. But surely they had to have been invited?

Sounds like trump took a couple shots at carney during his speech in Davos, who can blame trump from being angry with carney after all he’s at least partially responsible for carney getting elected so it’s only right he expects his dog to bark his way.

It seems Carney is laser focused on his larger agenda regardless of who he hurts. The Public Service is facing large layoffs despite rallying to him, and Ford looks mightily disappointed too despite his election time support. It’s as if Carney doesn’t care to salvage a relationship with the USA.

Allow me a little tinfoil hat moment— if the Canadian automotive industry were to collapse and shift south. Suddenly, just like that, the Chinese manufacturers of electric vehicles are willing to set up factories here, and fill that gap. Does Canada achieve the electric vehicle mandate in three years? One of our largest industries is now tied to Beijing and not Detroit (new world order) And we have electric vehicles everywhere as the most affordable and available mode of transportation.

I know very little about the auto sector but I know in the days that followed Chris crossing the floor restrictions were lifted so that Chinese companies could hold lobster buyer licenses openly and the Chinese are in the process of buying everything they can here in the seafood industry. If the liberals are willing to sell us fisherman down the river I see know reason why auto workers would be any different.

And does Canada have the transmission line and the rest of the necessary grid support for an all electric fleet in Canada. Doubtful, and expensive to build.

I think it will cost a lot. Fortunately our new Chinese friends have lots of money to invest in building the infrastructure to support their industry. It just has to be from The Golden Horseshoe to Montreal to start. There is already a lot of hydroelectric and nuclear energy in that corridor. Rural areas won’t adapt to electric vehicle readily. The Minister for energy has already said Chinese investment in infrastructure is welcome.

Trump may be making America great again. But he is also the best thing that has happened to Chinese expansionism.

I'm not sure what kind of earth shattering deal NATO could make for Greenland. It belongs to the folks in Greenland and Denmark, not NATO. And what kind of deal, short of a total land grab, could be better than the existing treaty between US and Denmark in place since 1951? Build US defense establishments on Greenland and let Denmark continue looking after Greenlanders' welfare ... and paying for it with Danish currency instead of US dollars. If the Danes were happy with that deal, why not stick with it? Win win for everyone. We all know what this nonsense was about: Donald Trump needing to feed his ego.

Anyway, I'll wait for confirmation from NATO that something has actually changed. At this point just saving the 1951 treaty for US might be an accomplishment. But not one Trump can take credit for. Just watch him try. :D

The good news - really good news! - is Trump is taking himself out of action re any further "negotiations" for Greenland. Wonder how long that will last. Rubio and Vance won't do anything ... but if they can handle that and keep Trump muzzled in the back seat maybe one of them can get the Peace Prize.
OH I’ve read numerous responses from you lately and have drawn several conclusions from the things you have posted. I see that you often but incorrectly use words and phrases that are common in the USA. My guess is that at one point in time of your life you lived in the greatest country on earth. Perhaps you were even born here. To use a modern example the young Anakin Skywalker who turned from a true and noble direction to embrace the dark side.

OH you have gone astray. You probably do not realize the extent these incoherent ramblings have taken you. In an effort to truly understand your point of view I will use the same translating software used by the UN to convey understanding.

I have entered the last several paragraphs of your ramblings and this is the translation to modern English.

“ I am a bitter old man who left my country. I have nothing good to say about my life or the country I abandoned. Please listen to my ignorance and make me feel important “

I hope this helps everyone better understand Dr. Do Little and see his point of view. It is my sincere desire to broker an understanding between all parties. I hope this helps us all better get along. Obviously the suggestions for dog pictures did not work.

Are you happy that the Chinese are investing in Canada? Are you really exited to have Chinese EVs being made/driven in your country?

I am trying to understand the tone of your posts.

I was actually waiting for some of our Canadian friends to bring up how they felt about Carney spending the weekend in China? So actually interested in your thoughts.

All wannabes with political ambitions.

Maybe but the slide into disaster didn't occur until the end of George W's second term. I remember watching a documentary where the French finance minister was recalling the leadup economic summit with Greenspan: "We could all see the tsunami coming but all we could do was sit around and talk about what bathing suit to wear." Greenspan's answer was it's just economic Darwinism: "Some banks will fail but the world will be better off in the end." All those millions of people who lost their homes weren't convinced happy days were ahead. Fortunately, we up here in the Far North were slightly (just slightly) less impacted because our evil socialist government regulates the chartered banks (only sixteen in Canada then but five pretty much controlled the industry). Our banks were not allowed to repackage mortgages and sell them overseas.
You tread heavily, but you speak the truth. I was one of those millions who lost their home in the post ‘08 world finance debacle. I’ll spare the details here, but it was just a hopeless mess. Well, I eventually dusted myself off, new job, new piece of land we’re building a house on, out of pocket this time so no mortgage (or taxes, thanks Alaska:)) but lost years of progress in the process. I was a young man back then. Now I see a lot of gray when I look in the mirror. Not sure what to say about politics one way or another, except the folks who write the rules never seem to be hurt by them too deeply, so perhaps us common folk would just be better off with fewer rules. Canada may not be quite as lucky next time, and you can bet next time is coming up before we know it.

The folks in Greenland are saying they weren't in the loop re Trump's surprise "future framework" deal supposedly worked out with UN. Danes aren't saying anything. I bet it's all baloney. Everyone will just play along and let Trump pretend to be the big "dealmaker." Stroke his ego and maybe he'll just go away. For a while. Someone PLEASE nominate him for the Peace Prize this year!

Make an ovale office where he can sit and sign executive orders all day. Give him ownership over Greenland so long he lives and by all means give him a framed recognition prize or diploma he can look at every day. This might give the world a break.

Have any of you listened to his speech at Davos? I have not. I would like to know what your take on it was, if so. I have been reading about the reactions of some of those in attendance.
I think that Rubios reaction in this picture pretty much sums it up ;)

It sounds like the Greenland deal is something similar to the deal that the UK has with Cyprus for Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area and Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area. If so that would mean US sovereignty over one or more bases on Greenland. If I understand it correctly it is something similar to owning an embassy only with a larger swath of territory.

This is the usual arrangement for US bases overseas. Typically, a Status of Forces Agreement with the host country requires it to turn over US servicemen/women accused of offenses to US for detainment until trial. That way if the charges are trumped up BS the accused can "escape" to US. For those justifiably convicted and sentenced to prison, US can keep an eye on their health while incarcerated in the host country. When I was in Korea the agreement seemed to work well enough (I was a US military policeman). No SOFA with Thailand so troops there were taking risks when off post.

As far as the land goes, I'm not sure if our posts in Korea were deeded or leased to US. Seems it's usually a very long term lease (e.g. Panama Canal was acquired on a 99 year lease).

I hate it. I think the direction Canada is going federally if flawed. I would like to see Canada take this opportunity to strengthen its position internationally by building its industry domestically, not with foreign ownership. Prime Minister Harper was setting this up but everything has been reversed.

The Conservatives here have an interesting take on things. They are pointing out the Liberal theme is that Canada is a victim and has no control over its own destiny so we have to accept new relationships with China etc. the Conservatives are positioning a message of hope and pride. I think the Premiers of a lot of Provinces echo the Conservative theme.

Canada is vulnerable to the information wars because our federal government has undermined any sense of a unified identity. I find it so perplexing because I have a strong sense of pride in this country.

Personally I would much rather be doing good business with our traditional partners to the south.

But the current administration doesn't really seem interested in that at the moment. It takes two sides to get a deal done.

I don't have a problem with Carney going to China to talk trade, any more than I would have a problem with Trump going to China. China is a big player in world trade, and no matter how much we don't like their politics and worldview one would be an idiot to act like they don't exist.

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
