"Obsolete" items that you still use

Whenever I take a trip, I usually have a medium or large format film camera with me. I love using my iPhone for quick digital shots & the results are great. It's convenient & the best thing for sharing quickly. But I've also like the slow laborious way of shooting too & I enjoy developing the film. I like the way the photographs look. Not always better. Just different.

GI fart sack. Issued to me on a fire crew in 1977. When the season was over my boss told me to keep it. The Forest Service was switching to disposable paper sleeping bags. I absolutely love this old sleeping bag. It has a snap in sheet and snap in insulation layer. The shell is tight weave cotton canvas. I wore out the OD green sheet and had to make a replacement. I have another I made that's fleece for very cold nights. The bag is quite heavy and it is warm. Extremely nice to sleep in. Almost wore out though. I would love to find another.

W.J. Jeffery 8-bore 3.25" double rifle manufactured October 21st 1895. The old girl is regulated for an 85 caliber ball/bullet over 10 drams of black powder and i shoot it quite often when the weather is nice.

That was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain during her state visit to Bangladesh in 1983.

She was actually a very sweet motherly lady, who treated everybody down to the common forest guards with humility & respect. She stopped me from scolding a forest guard who hadn’t properly tucked in his uniform’s shirt when they all assembled in front of her.

She used to love eating the strawberry jam biscuits from Olympia Bakery and dined upon red jungle fowl and Axis deer venison while she was under our care (because these were game animals not found in Great Britain). Very pro hunting lady. She used to own a John Rigby & Co. Mauser chambered in .275 Hi-Velocity, which she used for deer stalking (red stag) in Great Britain. She told me that her favorite British game meat, were actually muntjac deer and grouse.

Here's one that I will inherit from my Stepfather. An Addfeet Jr, which is a antique German mechanical calculator used for construction. I'm going to have to learn how to use it, I've watched him figure out all kinds of crazy dimensions in seconds over the years.

Prince Philip owned pair of James Purdey & Sons 12 gauge (2.5") sidelock ejector side by sides which King George V had gifted him. He also owned a James Purdey & Sons .500/465 Nitro Express sidelock ejector double rifle.

I guess I should feel old, but I don't. I shoot shotguns from 80-100+ years old with lots of drop at comb and heel. I use tin lined copper pans, which I have learned to re-tin myself. I have some split cane fly rods. I use single stage loaders with balance scales. I regularly use ancient wood and metal planes and chisels on doors and other wood projects, just keep them razor sharp. I like walnut and blued steel and chrome moly barrels for the most part. I like rust blueing. Except for pictures, I would be as happy with a flip phone. If someone broke into my house, I wonder if they would even take half my stuff, or know what to do with it.
What obsolete things do you still hold on to?

I have a great 1894 takedown delux in 3030 made in 1907.
Several other old rifles.
Im a sucker for mechanical watches. And vintage cars

Why, yes. But it was our President (Hossain Ershad) who hunted red stag with them. He was an avid sportsman of the highest order too.

They just don't make leaders like this, anymore. To the best of my knowledge... His Excellence King Juan Carlos of Spain is probably one of the few European Heads Of State left, who hunts.

I believe Crown Princess Victoria has also hunted (although she may not be an avid hunter).

I had the opportunity to be present at a private meeting with her in the mid 2000’s… a member of her security detail that I was speaking with mentioned that he had recently taken her on a hunt and she was a good shot.. (we were having a typical guy talk about firearms, our side arms, shooting, training, etc.. which led to him talking about how His protectee was competent with firearms… mine on the other hand I wouldn’t let near a cap gun lol…. Great guy… but a gunslinger he was not…)…

Somewhere I still have my dad's circular sliderule. Made of some kind of stiff cardboard it fit nicely inside my school math books. Still used it at college after the Army. It was more reliable than the first Texas Instrument calculators that came out then. Those things would gobble a pair of AAA batteries in an hour.

Most of my rifles are older than me.
I hate taking my son to museums because there's so much stuff in there I remember using as a kid. When that happens you realise you are getting old. Still have and use a VHS player and a record and cassette players.
