Number one caliber for DGR

....he says 416 rem mag is the number one caliber for Dangerous game for Africa .I think its the best choice .The problem is hardly anyone is making a gun in it anymore . .
Blaser makes the R8.

It depends on the person, place, DG type...

Since when is there “hardly any elephant hunting anymore”? The 458 win and 458 Lott are both still very common for African hunting. Any cartridge Winchester Model 70 or CZ 550 chambered in their rifles will be common in Africa so 375 H&H, 416 Remington, 416 Rigby, 458 win, 458 Lott.
Agreed. Seems elephant hunting has never been more reasonably priced than now. Non exportable bull elephant in SA, 20 lb exportable bull elephant in Zim are similar in cost to a trophy buff hunt and tuskless less. It seems there is more elephant hunting available now and at much more reduced cost. Many hunters are taking advantage of this.

I have a 416 Rem Mag in a custom Pre 64 M70, like it a lot, not sure it’s the #1 DG cartridge though? The OP should create a survey here on AH and see? I’m sure it’s been done before?

If @Hunter-Habib says it I believe it. 404 Jeffery.

I also like @skydiver386 description of the various candidates. Heavy game rifle vs dangerous game rifle vs stopping rifle. Best summary I’ve ever read. I’m not a PH but I’ve got the first two categories covered: 375H&H and 404 Jeffery. I’ll leave the small artillery stopping rifles to the pros.

You just said you are in Bangladesh? Why don’t you ask your “cousin” who imported the rifle about ammo availability?

Thumbs down? @bigborelover

You said your in Bangladesh currently and you are shooting the 505 at your family members home.

Someone asked you, “how is getting ammo over there ?”

Then you said “I don’t know ask somebody else”. I just thought that was strange? Why wouldn’t you be able to get that info? You are literally there with the rifle owner in the country of question.

Sorry for confusion I guess?

It was too appropriate to not copy and paste it.
As long as one new member comes along, we will always be hashing and re-hashing these topics. I have resigned myself to that! But, it was my turn to ask once upon a time, lol.

BTW, if we are talking about what IS, and not what SHOULD BE number one--375 H&H wins by sheer numbers...

There are no .505 Gibbs rifles in Bangladesh. If there was, I would know. Trust me, I’m in a position to know.

There are only three big bore rifles (larger than 8mm) in the entire country-
My .375 Holland & Holland Magnum
A .425 Westley Richards
A .500 Black Powder Express

Mine was imported into the country as personal luggage by my son-in-law in 2006. The other two came into the country during the British colonial era (prior to 1947).

My realitive bought it in the US and imported it to Bangladesh.
I can’t speak for Bangladesh, but importing a firearm into India—especially across that border—is a yeoman’s task at best. Getting a gun license in India is practically a unicorn hunt unless you’re very well connected at the highest levels.

Yes, there’s been significant economic growth and plenty of foreign companies setting up shop, but that doesn’t translate into firearms or ammunition magically flowing in. Importing .505 Gibbs ammo into India legally—ammo that’s scarce even in the US—is, quite frankly, unheard of.

No offense meant to Big Bore enthusiasts, but that claim stretches credibility a bit too far.

Now back to OP question - the no 1 DG rifle is a 470 ne ,,,why bcoz I own one :):)

Are you sure. Because I am pretty sure I shot one.

Dear All,

Our intriguing little forum member @bigborelover is actually a fraud. He’s not in Bangladesh (and definitely not firing any imaginary .505 Gibbs rifles). His IP address shows that he has been in India all along. I seriously had my doubts from his statements for a very long time. Today, my suspicions are confirmed.

He will probably be joining under another username. These kinds are usually members of Indian tabloid journalism (who are invariably anti hunting). Their favored tactic recently is to socialize amongst hunters so that they can start a sensationalized smear campaign against our kind after getting enough detailed information from us.

Be very careful out there.

Warmest Regards,
Habib

I’ve been fortunate to have made several trips to hunt DG in Africa with several more planned. A double rifle has always been taken (mostly 450-400 & 470) all with good results. And most trips I have been able to bring a 3 gun battery, is it a PITA well NO.
Mostly a 300 mag, 375, and a 450-400, But in Feb I’m back to Uganda and I may switch out the 375 for a really sweet 416 Rigby or a great custom 400H&H. I’m glad I’ve been able to take 2-3 guns. If I was doing a purely Elephant hunt then I would take just one gun….a double and when that day comes I hope I have a 450NE or a 450 #2. In Alaska a 375 for everything

Yes sir. I always try to be supportive of "kids" getting involved with big bores. As soon as he joined and started singing the praise of the .460 Weatherby and .600 OK, I realized he was not genuine.
