Next Buffalo hunt

We had the same brief as also can't take our rifles to Zim and wanted buffalo bulls. We did a lot of homework.

We are going with Jamy Traut to Caprivi in June. We also looked at Moz with Mokore (Duckworths) and Safaris de Mozambique with Simon Rogers

I hunted RSA with @JKO HUNTING SAFARIS and took two amazing buffalo in 2025. But I’ll also say that it depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Great animals in all the countries mentioned above.

My daughter went to Zambia for her honeymoon and loved it. Zambia did enter my mind, but I thought it would be a more costly proposition. Thank you for this info.

I don’t have any particular plains game animals in mind except for a Barbary sheep and bushbuck. My wife is losing her patience with the amount of wall space I am claiming for trophies. Those two still appeal to me, so that brings me back to South Africa at some point. However, for a buffalo hunt I am considering a different environment so long as it is not priced too much higher than South Africa.
If SA is done and Zim is out of the picture, I'd suggest the following in order.

1. Zambia
2. Namibia
3. Mozambique
4. Botswana
5. Tanzania

Zambia, Namibia and Botswana are also good for Chobe bushbuck.
The only reason Botswana and Tanzania are lower on the list is due to pricing.

From videos I have seen, my impression is that one hunts herds more often than just lone in a place like Moz than in some other countries. Is that accurate?

If you are hunting in the swamps and in the delta, you would be targeting herds. I personally would never hunt there. No wet hunting for me.

You generally aren’t going to find a buffalo hunt elsewhere at South African pricing now. Right now I’d budget $20k for trophy buffalo hunt outside South Africa. You need to be really careful looking for deals in concession areas. There are legitimate end of season deals or unsold hunts, but most low cost concession hunts I’d be very cautious of. If you are going to hunt outside South Africa spend the money on a quality area and speak to recent references from the last season. Not all areas are equal or stay in that top spot. The difference in $3-5k might be night and day.

If you’d be ok leaving trophies behind one of best deals on a buffalo is an own-use non-exportable buffalo in Caprivi Namibia for +/- $10k.

Thanks, that gives me a good idea what to expect. I say I am ok with a non-exportable buffalo until I see him! Although, 20k isn’t out of the ballpark, but that’s two hunts for non-exportable! That’s seriously worth considering.

I suppose since you don’t want the two separate tickets and reservations for the Zimbabwe work around, you could rent a gun. Of course it’s Sacrilege.

I have two reasons for wanting to hunt with my own guns. The first is familiarity. But, perhaps the more important aspect, is the romantic idea of my rifles being passed down, the stock embossed with a patina created in the fields, along with the stories of grandpa hunting in various places. I trust my heirs to shamelessly embellish the tales to enthrall their friends and family per stirpes.

My heirs have already asked, when I die where to sell my taxidermy and guns. So much for tales of my hunting adventures being passed out.

At least I am going to have the last laugh and will being controlling the money from my grave.

Makore Safaris-DUCKWORTHS at Coutada 9 in MOZ. There aren't better PH's in Africa and the area is 1 million acres of complete wilderness. They are just getting ready to open a new camp in the North. Also heard that gary just got a new area as well. They are hunting buff on C9 but on a pretty limited basis. I'd request Gary, he loves hunting buffalo and he loves to get close. On top of that there are loads of Kudu, Sable, Nyala----and you will also have lion encounter experience,....keeps things interesting.

Yep. I’ve taken a buff with Ernest. Great hunt, but you better like popcorn.

And no Mexican food

Tsala in Moz has lots of buffalo, will be tracking dugga boys, and wont be in a fence, will be an amazing experience, Luangwa Valley in Zambia offers the same , lots of buffalo in wild Africa, having hunted buffalo in Tanzania it also is amazing, but the cost is getting out of hand

Thank you

Correct.

Especially in the delta concessions, it’s mostly large herds.
Never mind spending a good % of your day sitting on an Argo.
On the plus side, it’s an incredible experience to see herds of buffalo that can number hundreds. Up Niassa way it’s more dry and a bit different.

Moz and the Caprivi aren’t known for exceptional trophy buff.
Tanzania, Zambia, parts of Botswana or the Timbavati and Klaserie areas of SA are where you should focus for bigger buffalo.

I would always recommend Zambia, because aside from DG and depending on the area, there are some rather unique plains game species on offer too. Livingstone eland, the Lechwes, Puku, Chobe bushbuck, Sitatunga, Cookson wildebeest, Lichtenstein hartebeest, Sable etc.

One of the best trophy kudu I've ever seen was in the Rufunsa GMA.

God Day Sir

Sounds like buffalo has properly got under your skin , and once that happens, there’s usually no going back.

If you’re looking for something a little different, Southern Mozambique is well worth considering. Tsala Safaris owns an unfenced wild area that shares a border with Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, with the Save River forming our north-eastern boundary. It is proper old Africa country — big open wilderness, no swamps, and a real tracking hunt on foot in wild, untamed country.

For me, that is what makes it so special: not just the buffalo, but the whole feeling of being in a truly wild place. If that kind of experience appeals to you, Mozambique should definitely be on your list.

Got a chance to meet and visit with these guys in Nashville. Would not hesitate to hunt with them in Moz. A big plus, they’ll pick you up in Joburg after a night at Africa Sky, and drive you through the Kruger for an overnight and then into Mozambique. Or you can fly. Your choice. Should be a great, wild area.

Need anything in trade?
