New guy from OH

Delaware....targets and scaring my friends....I wonder if I can hunt deer with a 458 Lott in oh?

Welcome and good luck in your quest to hunt Cape Buffalo in Africa

I think only straight walled rifle calibers and shotguns are permitted for hunting Ohio Deer during gun season.

What is a 458 Lott? Not bottlenecked to my eye....but yes, it is not listed.

Still, a 300 gr bullet at 2500 fps sweet!

I'm not from Ohio and don't know all of their firearms limitations. However I thought that Ohio was limited to Shotguns and Muzzleloaders for long guns until relatively recently. I think that a cartridge designed for use on African Dangerous Game is above and beyond.

I live just east of Columbus. I showed a .458 Lott round to a wildlife officer and he said it was OK... so I did, but didn’t get a deer. Basically it is a LOOOONG .450 Marlin.
The rules state straight walled or tapered. The Lott qualifies.

Until a few years ago the lower third of Michigan was restricted to Shotgun, Muzzleloader and straight walled Pistol cartridges. No bottlenecked cases allowed. The DNR then revised that policy to allow straight walled rifle cases conforming to specific dimensions. For several years now, some of my buddies have been "gaming" the system and now use rifles whose ballistics far exceed the "spirit" of the new laws. The restrictions were put there in the first place because of the higher population density and to some extent the smaller plots of land suitable for hunting. Just for giggles a 458 Lott develops slightly less than 6,000 lbs. of energy with a 500 Gr. bullet while a 30-06 develops around 3,300 lbs. of energy with a 180 Gr. bullet.

Welcome to AH. There are some fantastic forums on here, and all you'll need to know about which type of caliber is right for which specific type of hunt.

Hi. New here. I would love to hunt buffalo in Africa....that may come true someday.

For now, I would like to get a rifle fit for that and really have fun getting to know it.

Hi nksmfamjp,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.
The .375 H&H, loaded with 300 grain Swift A-Frame bullets is a decent buffalo getter.
Plus, it is quite an excellent caliber for so called “plains game” as well.
However, speaking strictly about African buffalos and heavy African game in general, cartridges such as the .404 Jeffery, .416 Rigby and .458 Lott are, provided you consistently shoot them well, so much the better for heavy/dangerous game hunting.

Cheers,
Paul

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
