Good morning everyone,

Just came off of my first safari in December in South Africa. Took this beautiful sable bull in Limpopo. The sickness is a real thing and all I can think about is my next trip. The saying that once Africa gets into your blood, definitely holds true. Anyways I thoroughly enjoy reading everyone's posts on this website and the knowledge that everyone brings is truly invaluable. It'll be a couple of years as I work on the funds but I would love to hear some first time cape buffalo hunting stories and the preparation that went into that hunt. I'm looking at cape buffalo, blue wildebeest, potentially kudu and eland for my next safari. I would appreciate any insight into hunting these species as well as rifle and cartridge recommendations and even some mid tier budget dangerous game rifles. Thanks again everyone.

Welcome to AH! Congratulations on your hunt and taking a beautiful sable! There is almost unlimited information and answers to all of your questions here. I would recommend a Winchester Safari Express 375 H&H or 416 Rem Mag, used CZ 375 H&H or 416 Rigby (custom AHR) or new/used synthetic stocked Blaser R8 375 H&H or 416 Rem Mag. These are suitable mid tier rifles for a one gun safari combining buffalo and plains game.

Welcome to the forum! Keep reading the "Trending" section and you'll discover what hunters use, prefer, or are down right set on certain calibers. No need to spend $$$$$ on hunting rifles, but what works. If you want a rifle with custom stock, you'll find yourself carefully handling it throughout the hunt and first scratch or drop and you'll probably keep it in your safe. Happy hunting!

Welcome to AH! Congrats on your first hunt, nice sable there. Like others, I would recommend a reliable rifle in .375HH to start. My personal preference is for my Winchester M70 Safari Express, but lots of choices out there. Someday you may want to step in caliber for buffalo and other large critters. But once you've figured out that the .375HH is so versatile, you'll not likely want to part with it.

With DG on the menu along with PG, my .470NE double and my .375HH is my two gun battery. If only PG is on the menu then it's still my .375HH and then likely my .300WM or one of my other "deer/elk" calibers.
