Neighbors

I live in a bit over an acre of land, and next to my property I have a neighbor who is a great neighbor. However, him and his wife like to have get together, and he ropes off the property line, so people won't drive into our property and run the chance of damaging pipes or sprinkler heads. Well, his guests are either stupid, ignorant or just flat out inconsiderate. Last night he had a get together, he roped off the area, so they wouldn't drive through the yard since it had been raining for two solid days. Well, the stupid, ignorant and inconsiderate guests, opted by driving around the roped off area and through my front yard. I didn't notice this until this morning.

I sent him a text telling him I was not happy with the behavior of his guests, and that they had driven through my front yard. Risking damaging the water main, sprinkler pipes and sprinkler heads. I'm waiting on his reply.

I'm trying to figure out what to do. One solution I'm thinking of is to put some shrubs on the property line to keep the idiots off my yard. What are you gents thoughts?

When I lived in South Florida, there used to be a show called Help me Howard. You would write to him with your legal issues, and he would post the question on TV, with the legal advice on what to do. LOL!

Punji sticks or Claymores. Go big right off the bat. Ooof. I know that is frustrating. Depending on where you live, shrubs could be a pin with initial cost and water requirements. I did do a hedge of viburnum (Texas) and that stuff was easy to establish and tough.

Would large decorative rocks look appropriate? They would be more immediate than shrubs and have the added advantage of causing damage to wayward vehicles.

The old saying of “Good Fences make Good Neighbors” comes to mind. Hopefully your neighbor will do the right thing and make it right.

When I worked a job that often required us to be very close to the edge of the road pavement, I would often stand to the side and lean out holding the spud bar like a walking stick. Sometimes that’s the only thing that would get traffic to slow down. They didn’t care to hit my crew, but they weren’t going to risk 6ft of steel tumbling across their vehicle.

Make them think twice, even when inebriated, before driving through your stuff.

Next time he has a get together post them around the areas where you want to impede access.

My 2 cents. Give him a call. Way better to sort it than a text! You say hes a good, so keep it that way. Less stress all round......ask him to supply you with Warning Landmine signs for his next party though eh

He called back and was very apologetic about what happened and had told his guest to not park on the yard. It seems like his friends cannot read and comprehend.

Yes, a fence would be a good fix, but they could still drive through my front yard. So, I am thinking about some type of bushes, or decorative plant to outline the property line and prevent these d*ck heads from driving on my yard.

I would do just that with the shrubbery idea. Anything else sounds like it would be unsightly such as a fence with a gate which could get expensive. In my experience, bringing legal in is a bad idea given the angst it would create with your neighbor long term even though it was his fault since it was his guests.

If it was me though I would let him know I was putting in the shrubbery and nicely let him know his guests would have to pay damages if they ran them over. Also, yes more money but I would put in mature shrubs versus small starter plants to ensure they are noticed.

Exactly what I'm thinking of doing. Waiting on my wife to get home from work so we can discuss what to plant.

This is the area I'm planning on planting some shrubs. This is not to scale, but to give you an idea of the area.

I feel for you. I woke up Saturday morning to what sounded like a tractor in my front yard. We had 5 and a half inches of rain Friday night and even with that amount of rain I don’t get any flooding but I looked out and there was a river flowing down my driveway. My yankee transplant neighbor was diverting the water from his driveway to my property and in the process washing out my driveway and water nearly came in my barn.
We had a spirited conversation and he finally agreed to stop but when we left to go to my parents house for Mother’s Day he dug it out deeper.

Not the first time he’s done this we’ve lived in the house since 1998 and never had problems with flooding until this yahoo started clearing land and filling in a retention pond and building berms. That’s even with tropical storm and hurricane rains in the double digits.

I like this. When I had my larger farm, I had signs made and placed every four feet on my tree line that said property under video surveillance "YOU ARE BEING WATCHED" Never had any problems with trespassers.

On one hand, you want to maintain a good relationship with your neighbor. On the other hand, the neighbor's guest is the problem. Maybe something like a split rail fence down the property line, all the way to the curb.

Every type of neighborhood has some kind of issues. Now if I could just get the local deer and elk neighbors to quit damaging my fences and the horses belonging to my over-grazing neighbor to stop trying to get to my grass and horses, all would be right with the neighbors. Oh well, such is life.
