It seems like Namibia is much cheaper in terms of trophy prices than RSA are those Namibian hunts good or is the extra price worthwhile to hunt in RSA. Looking for my first safari so Im clueless as to what to expect from an outfitter or to know whether Im getting a good deal or not. Also does anyone know if Zimbabwe and Tanzania will be open to trophy export to the US anytime soon. But if it does does that mean the prices will go up to what it is in other counties .

There are plenty of quality outfitters in Namibia and SA, many of which are sponsors on this site. You can find comparable deals in Namibia and SA, really depends on what your looking for and what kind of terrain/area you would like to hunt. Look at the outfitters on AH and you will get lots of positive feedback.

As far as Zim and Tanzania, are you referring to elephant export?

I much prefer Namibia to the RSA. That said there are great, good , and less good operations in each country. If you do your homework, your dollars will go very far in Namibia. If I may make a suggestion. Call Jack Atcheson Jr http://www.atcheson.com/ . Jack and his brother are the most experienced hunting consultants in the business. They represent a number of outfitters across Africa and will put together a hunt which matches both your expectations and budget. Remember, anyone can put together a cool looking website. If you use Atcheson's, you will have a great first trip.

40000 for an elephant is way out of my ball park 15000 is somewhat managble

If its elephant your after, You can hunt non export elephant right now in SA for around 15K and non trophy in Zim for less than 15k also.

Oh no elephant is a rather distant dream of mine looking for plains game

Lots of good plains game options right now for you to explore in both Namibia and SA, check out the deals/offers section on the site.

The conservancy hunts in Namibia give you a great taste of true wild Africa at a bargain price.

A good source of info for Namibia hunting is a book called "Ask the Namibian Guide" by Diana Rupp.
https://www.amazon.com/Ask-Namibian-Guides-Information-Professional/dp/157157364X

The author interviewed about a dozen Namibian PH/Outfitters and the book is very informative. When I got done reading it, I knew there were 2 or 3 Outfitters that I wanted to explore further (and a couple that I knew I didn't want to hunt with). I ended up booking a hunt with Joof Lamprecht and Hunters Namibia safari.

Regarding your question on exporting trophies from Zim and Tanz, I had no issues exporting several PG from Zim a few years ago. There have been some issues with airlines saying they won't carry any Big 5 trophies as freight, but it seems there are enough alternatives (FedEx, DHL, etc) that it's not a big deal.

Joof Lamprecht, Nick Nolte, Jamy Traut, and Dirk De Bod all have well established reputations. There are several others, not all of whom are in Diana's book. I have met Joof though not hunted with him. I have hunted with the other three - fabulous experiences in each case. Namibia's hunting tends to fall into four categories. Like SA, there are some large fenced concessions. There is also a huge swath through the central part of the country which is primarily low fence cattle country also teaming with PG (and leopards). North of that, the vast tribal conservancies begin and extend through the Caprivi Strip. As Sheephunter notes, this area is very much old Africa and can be hunted very reasonably for just plains game. Finally, a number of quality outfits specialize in hunting the Kalahari.

Like Red Leg, I much prefer Namibia to SA for several reasons. Kowas Safaris in Namibia is the ticket IMO. 80% repeat hunters is a great testimony to their excellence.

Hi and welcome to AH
Please send me a e-mail if you are interested in doing your hunt in SA. To me both SA and Namibia are top destinations.

Hello, hello.... Sorry I couldn't resist...;)

The simple answer to your question is that it is going to require some research on your part to find out the best fit given the goals and expectations you have for your first African experience. The good news is that much of that research can be done right here on this site. As reedy0312 mentioned, some of the most reputable, highly vetted outfits representing all of the most popular African destinations are sponsors of this site. Collectively these outfits offer a multitude of reports, reviews, and media for you to research. There are also many eager knowledgeable folks here willing to offer advice as you have already seen.

I have hunted both Namibia and RSA and both have their positives and negatives to consider when comparing the two destinations. Again, it depends on many factors including but not limited to trophy quality, quantity, and variety of species. Logistics is another big consideration. You can find quality outfits offering nice accommodations and great amenities at a good value in both destinations. However, I would not recommend using cost in being the determining factor in your decision making process.

Just as some have indicated they prefer Namibia, I prefer RSA for the sheer diversity of habitat and species above all else. That said, it goes to my earlier point that you need to decide what your goals and expectations are for the type of safari and animals that you are looking for. Once you decide on the animals you wish to hunt, how you want to hunt them, the importance of trophy quality, and variety of species available, you can narrow your field of research considerably.... Embrace and enjoy the research. It really is half of the fun.

............Also does anyone know if Zimbabwe and Tanzania will be open to trophy export to the US anytime soon. ............

If you tell me the next set of winning numbers on the Powerball lottery, I'll let you know the date that the USFWS will retract it's earlier directives in regard to Tanzania and Zimbabwe. :)

More demand = more :S Dollar:

Depends what you are looking for - like some mentioned lots of opportunity to hunt free range or low fenced areas in Namibia - vast tracts of open ground, something that is very hard or almost impossible to find in RSA.

A true free range experience definetly adds to any hunt, and free range trophies are extra special in my opinion

Welcome to AH @helllo.

You could list what you are looking for, and the outfitters on the site will be happy to contact you.

The idea that SA is only small high fenced farms is not exactly true, there are also very large properties that you may hunt.

Truth is both countries have outfitters making great offers. As someone mentioned you will need to do some research!

Dear Hello, Welcome to AH.com

My opinion... Both Namibia & South Africa has great hunting. Both countries have great outfitters/operators. Do enough research and contact each outfitters/operators references, read reviews and find one that fits to what YOU want. What you want in a safari may not be what someone else is looking for. Each outfitter/operator in any of the two countries are different and unique.

It's not easy to pick a outfitter... BUT it's part of the fun! Pick someone that fits to what you expect, and someone that you trust and feel safe with spending your hard earned cash.

Good luck and enjoy gathering information...!

My best
Jacques Strauss
