Name for a new wildcat cartridge

We made 458 WSM with my friend. We get very good velocities with short barrel.
680- 700m/s with 42cm barrel and we use 400gr Swift- A-Frame. The gun weights under under 3kg without scope

I call my wildcat based on the .405 Winchester case the 9,3x65R

When it comes to naming cartridges, I’m more of a traditionalist. Some of the new ones, like the 577 T-Rex and 600 Overkill are, to me, a bit ridiculous (that neither will ever see the light of day as a standard offering is, perhaps, a mild consolation).

My recommendation is to utilize the parent case in the naming scheme (unless it’s a belted magnum because H&H basic brass is the parent case for nearly everything). Then, tack your name on at the end (after all, she’s your baby).

Oldish thread I know. But just wanted to comment on this post above.

The .577 Tyrannosaur sounds cool to me - I’m a fossil nut though. However! As much as I like the .600 overkill as a cartridge I couldn’t own one just because of the stupid name. .600 Belted magnum or something I could go for.

I’m also not a fan of people making wildcats to tack their names on to for the sake of it. I’ve designed one, and it’s just named *caliber* and *case length*. Not giving away what it is, but as an example it’s similar in name to how the English did it - .577 3” etc.
To the point, makes sense.

Been kicking Around nicking up the 300wby to 9.3. Mostly because I have a shot out 300wby barrel for my ruger no1 and already have a 9.3x74R. Thinking about a longer range gun for plains game, like eastern Montana elk. As well as having grizz protection.

Right, but I have 300wby dies and brass, all I to do ream the neck on the die and expand the neck on the brass. I could also go 300ultra mag also, for the same reason. I don't own anything in PRC, so would require custom dies as well as if I use the P17 Enfield, magazine work, in the no1, extractor work, so not bad their. Just a idea I'm kicking around, the 300wby should push the 286 and 300 gr pretty good. I haven't gotten far with the idea yet, so haven't figured out load data yet, may square the shoulder up, while I'm at it.

curious how this turned out? Maybe the 2607 fps a typo.
I am surprised that with smaller case capacity you got higher velocity, unless you increased the pressure rating. Even using 30-06 max psi, I see 2366 fps with n540.

Sounds like a lot of work to just basically reinvent the .375 Weatherby Magnum. How much real difference on game would there be between a ".366 Weatherby Magnum" and the .375 Weatherby Magnum?

Ahh, just something I'm kicking around, I have lots of 300wby brass and 9.3 bullets, not so much 375 bullets. I have a lathe and mill, so no matter what, barrel would have to be sent out and re rifled..may just start with 8mm, or 35cal. But really been wanting to see just how much you can ring out of the .366 and far it will shoot accurately. It's not something I need, just love to tinker and have lots of barrels and actions laying around to play with.
