If you had the option of hunting your choice of mouflon or fallow, which would you choose, and why? I’ve an upcoming trip that is time constrained, and it looks like I’ll be forced to make the decision one way or the other.

I haven’t taken either so I guess which ever I saw first. If I had to pick one I suppose mouflon just because I think it is easier to find opportunities for a good fallow hunt.
Good luck with which you choose!

Fallow deer in the rut is a really unique experience. The deer are very vocal and active. Outside the rut flip a coin if you can’t decide.

Mouflon by far! Fallow are more tame than any other deer I have encountered. Mouflon IMO better eating as well, especially with Middle Eastern spices, yum.

Are you basing that on fallow deer in Texas or free range fallow deer in Europe? Fallow definitely are not a whitetail deer, but I’ve seen mouflon become very tolerant behind a fence also. Both are a highly managed species compared to red stag and roe deer.

I hunted both the same week in Croatia. I guess my answer would depend upon the location and situation. Id gladly hunt free range mouflon again in the rocks and cliffs above the Adriatic. Id do that in a heartbeat over the fallow hunt.
However, if I was hunting in Hungary or other locations where the fallow are free-range and in the rut. I'd be all over that.
Best of luck, regardless of what you choose!

Texas for me, and across the pond for a few commenters on AH
Very few animals are "white tail" wary....

Where will you be hunting them?

I would pick fallow if there is good quality. But, they are both enjoyable. I don't think you go wrong with either one. Go with whichever one captures your interest more.

I have hunted both on various ranches and good herds of either can be quite cagey if they've had hunting pressure. This is a tough call, I like them both a lot. No joke, I'd probably flip a coin and not regret the outcome. If you can, make plans for the other next year.

These are two game species of Europe that are not comparable, and therefore the terrain where they are hunted is not always the same. It depends on whether you are only interested in the trophy or whether you also want to be challenged in the hunt itself. Fallow deer are always found in much more easily accessible terrain than mouflon. It is certainly possible to hunt Mouflon in also very easily accessible terrain in Europe, like in my region for example, but there are also Mouflon hunts that take place in very steep mountains. Therefore, I recommend choosing Mouflon, and to hunt it in a more challenging terrain, such as southern France for example.

I think it depends on in what environment you want to hunt either species. Fallow bucks in the rut is an amazing experience. Mouflon in the mountains would be a good hunt, but most Mouflon hunts are in the low lands / farm land and not a great hunt experience imo.

I have both... from Texas. For taxidermy purposes, the fallow makes a stunning mount. Mouflon look alot bigger on the hoof than on the ground. A striking mouflon mount is very nice also, but doesn't command the same attention on the wall. Spoken like a true taxidermist

Fallow deer during rut in free range is difficult to defeat, mouflon if you hunt in mouintains IS also amazing.
I Will choose fallow deer if is in rut, if not mouflon.
If you ara hunting in fence then doesnt Matter both are stupid in fence places, go for your favorite.
