luggage type

I would only take locked luggage through JNB and actually anywhere these days. I have a good friend who retired from working at the Denver International Airport and you wouldn’t believe the stories he relayed about theft even in the USA.
The only loss I've personally had was in a US airport--Detroit. It would have to be a comfort to have luggage plastic wrapped in Africa as only they can overdo it.

Standard duffels are not allowed through JNB. Sorry but it’s a rule regardless of what you hear. I recommend a standard hard side suitcase or if you travel to hunt a lot then go with the Pelican suitcase like some of us are using now.

I can't recall a time where guns delayed me 2-4 hours in customs on the US side.
I’ve never spent 2 hours. At DFW it’s 10m max, ATL one hour.

I use lockable duffles on all trips. If you go through a "bad" airport, nearly any bag can be breached.
Use a meet and greet service as well as an escort through customs and gun check in. That is worth the price.

Luggage theft is a big deal. It happens. What I have done is carry optics and cameras in my carryon. I pack everything else that is valuable in the gun case (for me a Tuffpak). I only pack clothes (no electronics) in rolling duffles. Ammo does not get stolen if you pack it in a locked pelican case.

Further idea (and I know people do not like it), use camp guns. I do this most of the time now to lessen the overall travel cost and speed up the airport issues. When returning to the US, guns delay you at least 2-4hrs in customs.
A locked Pelican is pretty tough to break in!

Wifey ordered this for my trip to Limpopo. It's very, very durable. I would say Bombproof, but JoBurg is JoBurg! Definitely worth checking it out! 20260408_181856.jpg

Been traveling internationally with firearms for 20+ through a number of different ports of entry over the years and never had gun related delay remotely like that returning to the States.

If it doesn’t roll it doesn’t fly. I use a military style rectangular wheeled go bag by Force Protection. The current one has been going strong for at least a dozen international trips. I am looking at it now as I type here in Zagreb. I do put TSA locks on it, but if someone wants to rummage through my dirty underwear, have it.

Thanks to @Tanks, I gifted the lovely Mrs Red Leg a set of Rimowa a couple of years ago. Fabulous product.

As someone who glys 2-3 times a month you can’t go wrong with Briggs and Riley. After 15 years the rubber coating on the handle of my roll aboard started to wear off. Lifetime warranty the fixed it and had it back to me in 10 days no charge.

If all you’re carrying is clothes I don’t know what you’d need a hard sided case. Just a lot heavier.

Luggex ZX28 arrived and very pleased with it, plenty of room for everything and then some.
Seems well made and looking forward to giving it a try this June, using compression bags for clothing and can pack it with lots of stuff. Did prepack of what I wanted to take and over the 50lbs but under 70 so looks like I will pay Delta $100 for it being over. Taking some items for camp staff and PH puts it over, but I am always over the 50lb limit when going.:)

Rimowa one day maybe!

I bought one for my wife. Pretty cool bag.

Pelican Air

I pack everything, besides my rifles and ammo, to carry on. One hard sided lockable roller carry-on and one backpack are always with me. That’s everything I need for 14 Days…

Just to confirm , the yellow pelican is what your carrying ammo in?
I like the idea of that size pelican as I have the same one and easier to not loose it like those tiny ones.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
