I have read many of the old threads but don't see any since 2024. We are traveling without weapons from CLT through LHR to JNB in June 2026. We have arranged for a twelve hour layover on the front end of the trip. We arrive prior to 615AM and fly out at 7PM.
Questions
1) I have two daughters over 18 and my wife, so what do we need to do between 645AM and 3 PM in London to say we have been there done that?
2) I am aware we need the pseudo visa for entrance into the city. How long/difficult is the re entrance into the airport?
3). should I hire a service to drive us around and show us things or wing it alone?
4). since luggage is checked through, should we take advantage of the storage for carryon items at LHR for this little excursion?

I'll chime back in after my friends (and kids similar age) return on Fri eve. One place to go is perhaps the greatest natural history museum in the world (stocked by people we've read about)! About a 1/2 hr bus/car ride or 45 min by train, as "L" Airport is considerably west of London (they knew the Concordes were coming!) I'd like to see a show at Royal Albert Hall, but of course the trip would be scheduled around that. 'Almost went to see the Cream reunion in 2005 (tickets were ~$300 to start then went up to $1,200 (plus flights, stay etc.) when I learned they would be releasing a DVD set and then subsequently announced US dates. Hail Churchill and Ozzy! They could use another Churchill today.

i do the very same thing until about Feb 2 every year. lol Maybe he's friends with Doc & Marty?

the world and England could definitely use another Churchill...
and Wilberforce...
I could also use Doc and Marty...

First if you have not already done so, you need to download the UK ETA app and apply for your ETA via the app.

You have have three way into London. (1) Heathrow Express (2) Elizabeth line (3) tube line. Elizabeth line will be the best value for time and money.

Walk by Big Ben, tour the Tower of London, Westminster, Buckingham Palace, That the big ones. I would allow one hour to return to Heathrow and at least two hours to get through Heathrow security and immigration

Hello,
I'm a Brit who now lives in Michigan but still get's back to the UK every 3 months or so. First as there are 4 of you, just take a taxi from Heathrow into central London, it will about the same cost as the London Express train. There are just so many options to see, I would recommend that you try to pre plan your day as your 12 hour layover will quickly only really give you 6 or 7 hours at most in central London (1 hour for arrivals and airport exit, 1 hour taxi into London, I'd leave London 3.5 hours before 7pm flight by taxi or Heathrow Express Train to return to the airport, it's a busy place!

The majority of museums are free unless you see a special exhibit so it's easy to pop in and out, I would recommend a quick stop at Holland & Holland, go upstairs to the gun room and shop downstairs for something. Your wife may enjoy Fortnum & Mason, Harrods or Selfridges. Plan a bus tour to see the main historic sights. Pre book for lunch somewhere special.

It will be an expensive day and you may need to think about what you buy as it will add to your luggage. Enjoy what you get to see. Be aware tourists, there are far too many pick pockets etc. just like and large city.

Travel as light as possible, research secure lockers at Heathrow to leave some of your carry on items.

My first safari I did a similar layover at Heathrow. I was so tired after the red-eye out of Toronto I just didn't care to be touring anything. Crapped out in the lobby. The flight from there to the other end of the earth is LONG! With any luck you will be in at your lodge in time for dinner and a quick trip to the range. Everyone will be very worn out by then. Do you have a connecting flight out of Joberg or being picked up there? I presume you will not be taking rifles?

No rifles. We land at 7 am in Jnb. We will be picked up from there.

Following. I have an 8 hour layover both ways, and trying to decide if we can leave the airport.

If you’re concerned about time, I would suggest that you walk to the Sofitel in T5 get an Uber and head to Windsor. You can take a tour of Windsor Castle, have lunch and head back to the airport and still have time for some shopping or lounge time.

@slam8031 with 3 ladies with you it may be best to go to Windsor castle instead of into London. It’s a great tour of the castle. Plenty of old firearms as well as dolls houses and clothing etc for the girls to look at! It’s all in one place and only 1/2 an hour from the airport. Just down the M4 so you don’t need to worry to much about getting stuck in traffic. Might be worth a look.

A few ideas - St James Street. JJ Fox & Co (Churchill's cigar shop) for Cubans, Lock & Co. (hatshop that is a few hundred years old), and Berry Brothers if you are interested in old wines, ports, liquors, etc. Cecil Court - for books, maps (expensive), Hatchard's - a great old book shop with normal prices and great selection. Walk through Hyde Park, grab a meal in the innumerable excellent restaurants. If you want to be super efficient, find a driver/tour guide to haul you around to maximize time and lay eyes on many historic sites (palace, Big Ben, Parliament, Trafalgar Square, etc). We hired a driver/tour guide for Istanbul when we had a long layover and wanted to squeeze our every second with something fun.

Take the Heathrow Express to nearest stop to Tower of London.
After touring it for hours. Get on the double decker busses. Red, blue or green line. That’s what I did on advice from stewards on plane.
They also recommended Big Ben but I only had 6 hour layover.

Heathrow Express goes to Paddington Station, From there it’s the Circle Line to the Tower of London.

Windsor is closest to the airport.

My last couple of times in London the traffic was so bad getting in from Heathrow in the morning that it would really eat into available time.

Take an uber or Heathrow Express into the city. Go light on the carry-on so you don’t have much to clear security on the way back in, or carry around in London.

I budgeted 3 hours to clear security upon re-entry and we needed less than an hour. I’d budget for 2 hours if doing it again.

The London Tower was my Girlfriends favorite place we visited on a similar layover. She also really enjoyed Borough Market and sampling all the different foods especially their Chocolate Covered Strawberries. We did this for a brunch then headed to the Tower of London. I’d also suggest a pub or something for an early dinner with Traditional Fish & Chips and depart for the airport around 4:30 so you have travel time and time to clear security.

If you decided to skip the tourist tour and focus on one place, I vote Natural History Museum. See if you can get the Spirits tour. Otherwise you have trophies from Selous and others there, extinct species not able to be seen elsewhere, and a full size Irish elk. If you can find a private tour, that'd be worth it.

I my opinion, Rigby put in a lot of effort with visitors but might not be viable with the time available.

Rules, Boisdale or Simpsons on the Strand for a first class lunch, if time allows but the traffic is terrible and the tube apparently shut in places today so might be risking it.

As others have said, Windsor Castle is almost next door. You can see it as you land.

We had a 7.5 hour layover in Heathrow coming back from Jburg in early Jan (no firearms). We stored our carry-ons at one of the storage centers outside security on the main terminal level and hopped the tube to Westminster area. All my London friends suggested Westminster area as the biggest bang for the buck with 7+ hours (Abby, Parliament, London Bridge, Big Ben, etc.). It was also suggested to not take uber/taxis into or out of Westminster due to congestion pricing inside the town limits, which makes for terrible traffic apparently. The Tube (subway) was fast and efficient...easy to make our way from the terminal using signage, E-ticket machines at all the entrances, etc. BUT!!! once you are in the Tube it can get confusing fast so make sure you have a Tube map and a general understanding of your line/stops before you get in there. We elected to get some air around Big Ben and hit the Churchill War Museum, which was a 2 minute walk from the Tube Stop. If you haven't done it and are at all interested, I highly recommend. When the war ended, they up and left everything as is in the underground bunker...maps, radios, beds, etc., rediscovered in the 60s and turned into a museum underground. It was an amazing break from travel monotony and our 3 teenagers and my wife enjoyed it quite a bit. We allotted 1 hr back to Heathrow and 2 hrs to get through security (mid day on a Saturday) and we had plenty of time to spare at the gate. Have a wonderful trip!

I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
