In Search Of .470 Capstick

No dog in this hunt….

I will say I just bought a really nice Freedom Arms hunting revolver from these folks and all went well. Said some SCI executive’s widow was selling his stuff. FWIW…

I shot the original A Square .470 Capstick that was presented to Peter by the company when first introduced. A brutal weapon to shoot. For some reason, maybe because it just didn't fit me but one of the most punishing rifles I have ever shot.

Once you get into proper .458+ dangerous game rifes, weight and balance become more critical. Most modern guns are designed to be carried a lot and shot very little. This is why i prefer older guns...

A 470 Capstick or 458 Lott rifle should weigh around 11lb (5kg). The gun should be balanced slightly to the rear so the muzzle flip dissipates some of the recoil, but not so much that you completely lose your target.

Thanks!

Krish just put one up for sale on here (a Real A-Sq.) Buy it. I have the Win custom shop model (which will kick like hell as compared to the heftier, coil-chek stocked original A-Sq! God Bless the Lt. Col.!

RIP Art Alphin!
Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Brent Alphin (September 5, 1948 – January 8, 2026) was a United States Army officer and military historian.

He was the founder and owner of A-Square, manufacturer of American hunting rifles.

There's one for sale right now in Classifieds

Very cool! And you remind me of his 3 variants
This one is mine that I put on consignment. It was totally original when I bought it. No longer original but a solid rifle nonetheless. That said, I never shot it so can’t help anyone in that department.
of rifles: The Ghengis Khan, the Hannibal and the Hamilcar. Some big boys were on long Enfield-style actions, others M70 and then some what was available vs. what the customer wanted. I bought a .338 A-Sq (.338-460) from a real fan, then he later told me he had an M70 .338-06 (I'd have bought that the day I met him!) lol but picked up an ultralightweight weatherproof Wby that was also a real shooter (and quite practical in overlapping US deer/bear/elk seasons)! God Bless Art. Where the economy's at today: Don't say a word about what Art knew! ;) Buy semi-custom guns in the $2K-$3.5K range and you won't be disappointed these days! IF you're shooting <150 yds at 120 lb deer by home, buy whatever you like. As a serious hunter, I'd far prefer having what's necessary in any given situation! Like Art.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
