I'll be, The "Sako 500 J" arrived!

I wish Sako would use a wider/longer recoil pad on their big bore rifles. They are far too narrow and short to handle any real recoil. See this picture comparing a Sako Brown Bear on the left to a Kimber 375 with a Decelerator XL pad on the right. There really is no comparison!

That's really telling, I would have to agree with you

@Daniel Cary - I watched the video. The first guy to shoot had the rifle mounted properly and didn’t have to crane his neck down to the sights. The second guy has the stock of the rifle too low on his shoulder and his head is cocked over to see the sights. Foot and body position was also a factor with the second guy. He made it much more difficult (and painful) than it had to be.

When the caliber goes up, the fit of the rifle to the shooter becomes more critical. And like @TOBY458 said, the recoil pad leaves much to be desired.

My only load for my 500 Jeffery is a 570g TSX at 2300 fps. Since I don't plan to hunt elephants I don't load solids, though I have some of the Barnes 570g banded ones. Recoil is ... sporty

That helps, I'll study this video again.
Great information. Thank You!

Trying to post it from new phone? It was a trek just to get it home ..

This is ridiculous, ... my apologies, technology's way too far over my head anymore...

I'm shocked the capabilities these phones have for photography, when they work. Not really understanding why their not opening here, when sent to email, etc...

Hi Daniel, The issue is not with your phone/mobile device. Your image is 15.2 MB so due to the large size the system on AH will not give you the option to insert the full image. I believe that the system in configured so that any image above 10 MB will only show as an attachment. Hope this helps, Jerome

We had a Safety Meeting yesterday, and a few fellow coworkers that take an interest. The purpose was too run the Sako given the short day & no one wanted anything to do with it given the opportunity?. I'll get it out next week, & try to get some footage.

I do thank everyone for all the afore mentioned comments.
Respectfully,

I have shoot the Sako 85 in 6,5x55 and it bounced every 5-10 rounds back into the receiver. The "S"-length action have far less if any of those issues. A friend just sold his Sako 85 in 375 H&H and I took over his cases, some had a dent and he also stated that they bounce back occasionally. I think it's really sad Sako never bothered to redesign the action to eliminate the problem since I like the array of actions and the blued steel as well as the classic lines. I bought Mausers instead.

@BeeMaa I've never had a problem with ejection on my Sako 85 300 wm or Sako AV 338 wm. Perhaps it is a problem with certain cartridges, but one should be careful about making generalizations, especially on a rifle you have no experience with.

I believe it happens with empty cases bigger than the 338 Winchester magnum

I have a CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. The recoil is but a "maidens kiss"

I think you have a career in politics. The way in which the recoil is described doth change from page to page. First " a scratch." Then "ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man!"

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
