Hi from northern Sweden

Welcome to AH

Welcome to AH Loxodrom! Nice to have you join the conversation after so many years.

:S Welcome:

Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Yes, the .458 is very good for moose. The older gentlemen in the hunting team with their 6.5x55's is almost afraid of it.

I'm happy to be here. The forum has given me many hours of nice reading of hunting stories and gun projects.

Welcome!
Besides moose, what else is local game in Sweden? Do you have/hunt wild boar?

Welcome aboard!

Where I'm at we don't have boars. Yet. They are in the more southern parts and causes at lot of damages to farms and traffic accidents.
Most common game is moose, roe and red deer. Bears is becoming quite popular to hunt too. Sometimes when Lynx's does too much damage to reindeer herds (reindeer in Sweden is domesticated and the property of our natives) the opportunity gives to hunt Lynx's too, but it is highly regulated by the state. We also have wolfs, but they are a big no-no, even if they chew up your hunting dog.
We also have some smaller games including hare and different types of grouse.

Loxodrom, welcome to the AH forum!

Welcome to the other side. Glad to have you here.

Glad you decided to join the conversation. As you are a fan of the .458, you’ll fit in perfect here.

Welcome Loxodrom!

Giday Loxodrom and welcome to the A H forums

Glad to have you on the posting side.

Welcome.

Loxodrom it is good to have you posting. Why are the old 6.5 x 55 users afraid of the 458? NOISE? Over the years how many moose have been killed with a 6.5 x 55 vs a 458. I know that the old Swede may not be optimal for the task but it seems to me that it has been getting the job done for more years than most of us have been alive.

The moose ratio for 6.5x55 to .458 is probably 20000:1. The 6.5x55 was very popular for almost half a century and has proven it self to be more than capable of taking moose. Ammunition is also cheap and available everywhere. It has good accuracy and low recoil.
If the shot is placed correctly no moose can survive a 6.5x55.

What scares them? I don't know, maybe the fact that you almost can fit an expanded 6,5 bullet in the barrel of the .458?
The .458 punches nice big holes when the 6.5 sometimes destroys a lot of meat.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
Thanks,

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
