Hello all

I have an original leather case from a 1910 Holland & Holland (16gauge Paradox hammerless)

Leather case is in very good condition although one strap is missing and the other one has a missing end. I will make a replica strap, and repair the original one making an extension and giving it some patina to match the original.

Inside the case I have several original accessories, but there are some empty boxes, and I don't know what I am missing.

Currently I have
-Original oil bottle, with H&H stamp
-Original pair of 16 gauge strikers, with H&H stamps
-Original pair of screwdrivers, with H&H stamps

Bellow the barrel there is a cleaning rod which I doubt it is original, as it has no marks. It is fully metal with a rounded handle (sorry no photos here). Maybe someone could post photos of an original cleaning rod , with I suppose should be in nice wood

Also, maybe someone may have information in how an original case should look like with all its original accessories and their position in the case

BTH, the original stock was short, and when they fit a new one they made it longer, and it wont fit in the case as in the right hand side, there was a section with a lid. That section/box has been dismantled carefully so the gun can fit, but my plan is to shorten the stock as per the original,, and in case I need it to be more longer, I would fit a glove rubber extension, do the compartment/box with the lid will be fitted again.

Best regards
Paco

There’s a beautiful gun and case. You may want to consider having a new compartment and lid manufactured for the case rather than cutting down the stock. From all the things I have read on this site, having a longer stock is a valuable feature on a gun and I imagine the gun is the most valuable piece of that set. Either way, congratulations and best of luck with it!

A fun gun!

The original tools were likely made by Dixon. The gun is certainly worth more with the 1" silver's pad and modern shooting dimensions than it would be with a horn butt plate 1" shorter. If the case shows signs of modification, I would simply restore the case to conceal those modifications rather than redoing the case completely to accomodate a shorter gun that is less useful. It looks like a leather pouch to hold the jags and loops is missing but they are available from time to time. Overall, it looks like you have the common case accessories present from that time frame. The cleaning rods weren't always signed so that too may be original or at least contemporary to the case.

H&H didn't make cases nor did they make accessories. They all used the same suppliers in the trade.

The gun stock is not original, so I dont have problem to cut 2cm, so it can fit the original position.

Of course H&H would certainly not make the case or the accesories, but they will all be marked, and the cleaning rod would be strange to be the only accesory with no mark/stamp.

Could you post a photo of the leather pouch? what are the jags and loops?

What about the bone small boxes to keep spare strikers/firing pin? Some people say thet originaly came with, some say it didnt. Any way I find them a very nice addition for the gun case

I send a few more detailed photo of the rest

Here you can see the case with the compartment and lid at the right. When they fitted and new longer not original stock, the gun will not enter the case.... I just removed the compartment walls to check fitting, and I a, not happy, so yes, i may end up shortening a few cm the non original stock, so it fits the original specs of the case.

Screw drivers will just be loose in one of those compartments? It is strange they don't fit in a more tidy space.

What do you think about the metal cleaning rod??? I am unsure if it is the original or not. If it is original, I have no clue as how it is secured in the case bellow the barrel, as it wont fit the metal locking piece in the case. That is why I was hopping for forum users to post a photo of their H&H cases to compare and clarify

Nice gun and case. The cleaning rod looks like it is aluminum 3 piece rod and not original. The leather label is before H&H received a royal warrant from the King of England. I think the label was used from 1904-1911.

I’m not sure that the rifle is not a bit newer . From memory the hand detachable locks only came out in 1912 . Also there was no reference to a royal warrant on H&H trade label even as late as 1929.

Do you have Donald Dallas book on Holland&Holland? The leather label in your case was used from 1902-1911. From 1911-1936 they used a label “By appointment to His Majesty the King.” The hand-detachable lock was introduced in 1908.

I did a little more looking and King George V issued H&H a royal warrant on 1 Feb 1911. Unfortunately, the Paradox book does not list serial numbers except for pairs, magnum paradoxes, etc. Your paradox looks like a number 2 model. Did you send a history request to H&H to obtain a history record?

Ken

Firstly very nice H&H. I would definitely contact H&H and see if you can request the records. That might give you details on what was in the case, but will definitely tell you the original LOP and sales date.

As you probably know Paradox guns like yours were aimed at the colonial market as ‘do it all’ equipment. As such I would not be surprised if it came with a lot of accessories to keep one going. Yours still has the turn screws which is nice and expensive to replace.

You can buy new made H&H branded accessories from them and there a lot on the secondary market especially in the UK. I have one of their cleaning kits still going strong after 20 years of use.

It would have has a wooden cleaning rod, likely ebony colored, though made from oak. I would never put a metal cleaning rod down the barrel of my Paradox or any quality double. The pouch Rook describes would have at least one jag, one bronze bore brush and mop.

Along with the turn screws there would likely be a chamber brush with the same handle design (ivory or walnut)

Also a grease or Vaseline "jar" for greasing the joint whenever the gun is assembled and an oil container.

or a square one as in this kit.

Finally, many cases left a square for a flannel role from which patches were cut for detailed cleaning.

Some folks are uncomfortable doing business with CSMC due to claims of doctoring classic guns such as the Model 21. Personally, my favorite waterfowl gun and my favorite dove gun are both CSMC products and are superb. I have also fitted out several cases using their offerings.

Instead of cutting the stock

The case can easily be modified and the area circled in white moved to the right or removed all together and new partition added.

Jeez - I need to edit these before hitting send! "have had" "flannel roll."

I agree, CSMC is good to trade with. As long as your not shopping for a “rare” model 21
