Hey everyone! I’ve hunted my whole life and never dreamed of going to Africa. I was offered an all expenses paid trip for me and my 15 year old son to go to Kimberly and hunt on an 11 day hunt and am getting pretty pumped although a little scared lol. I’ve never flown more than 4-6 hours and now 17 and with my son! On top of all the plane wrecks lately and crime that seems rampant in South Africa. To be fair, I’ve never looked at crime or stats in Africa until I’m now going lol. So, can I get some tips or travel tips for a newbie that’s nervous? To be fair I live beside Memphis Tn which per capita, is one of the worst places on earth. Thanks in advance!

If your PH is picking you up at Tambro (or you are staying overnight and then flying to Kimberley) no reason to worry about the crime unless you are heading into Joburg for some crazy reason. Flights continue to be really safe. Safer than driving in Memohis I bet.

Somebody else said it on here first, but I am envious of thr man going on his first safari. So much to enjoy and such a special place. You and your son will both enjoy it so much.

Advice depends a bit on what you are hunting and with whom, if you are taking a rifle or two, and what your experience is in hunting before. My advice is budget a bit for taxidermy. That one is a bigger expense than you'd think initially. And take a good hat and chapstick. And practice on sticks.

Be prepared. Zebra is surprisingly delicious. I havent stayed overnight at the airport in Joburg, but lots of folks have and there are two or three convenient options. If you are bringing a rifle there are a few companies that can assist with that. Well worth the small expense. That list looks like fun. You will have a blast.

I have heard that antelope and piggy wiggy hunting is quite good there.
And so, I look forward to your hunt report and especially your photos.

Johannesburg is a huge city, somewhat like Memphis but even more so and of course with that goes a lot of crime.
However, just like Memphis where you live, as long as you don’t walk aimlessly about, looking like a passport laden and cash heavy tourist but instead, you follow your driver’s advice, you will pass through Johannesburg, secure and happy.
