Gun stores in Alaska

We are planning a trip to Alaska for June. We plan to fly into Anchorage, rent a car, and drive up to Fairbanks. If I am looking at the maps correctly, it is possible to drive up the western route past Denali and back down on an eastern route through N. Pole and Tok. Part of the trip is to visit with an elderly cousin who lives in Big Lake and the rest just sightseeing.

Are there gun or outdoor stores along the way in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or any place in between that a special visit? We have no set agenda or schedule so we don't mind driving a little out of the way if needed.

Not answering your question _ been WAY too long since I was there, But I drove that route opposite of you, Went HWy 1 to 4 to FBK then Hwy 3 back down to ANC.


ANC had some gun shops and outdoor equipment stores, as did Fairbanks.

Downtown Talkeetna and lunch at Denali Brewing Co is always good. A flight seeing tour of Denali is epic if the weather cooperates...

Denali Park will be a "zoo" that time of year. But they run bus trips into the park if you don't mind crowds.

There is a couple of cool history museums in Fairbanks.

The Chena Ice Museum and Hotsprings at Chena outside of Fairbanks are a good time.

A drive down to the copper river to MaCarthy and tour the Kennsington Mine is fun. I think they are doing jet boats rides on the Copper river also.

There are glacier tours, zip lining and stuff to do at Glacier View area and Sheep Mountain Lodge.....

Lots of stuff to do and see along the way.... HAVE FUN!!!

Palmer Wasilla Highway is Arctic Ammo.
Chimos in downtown Wasilla.
Sportsman's Warehouse on the Parks Highway coming into Wasilla from Anchorage.
Most any of the Three Bears have a decent firearms selection.

A special place to visit in Alaska most certainly would be the Great Alaskan Bush Company. They have all kinds of crazy stuff to choose from.

Most of the gun stores in Alaska have ordinary stuff at exaggerated prices, not much to write home about. The one exception that comes to mind is Iron and Wood in Fairbanks, this little shop has a surprising array of vintage firearms at pretty reasonable prices. You may actually find something worth buying there!

Great Northern Guns in Anchorage has a LARGE inventory of used guns, but their prices are high. When I have a bit of time to kill in Anchorage I stop by to look at their guns. Never bought a firearm from them, not sure if they would haggle on their high prices. They are one of the few dealers in Alaska who sell black powder so I have bought that there.

As has been said, in Fairbanks the place is Iron and Wood. While not as large of inventory as Great Northern in Anchorage, they have some unique stuff and some very good prices to be had. I have bought numerous firearms there, including some old unique stuff I feel I got at a very fair price.

If you get through Delta Junction, Granite View Sports is worth a stop. They are a relatively small gun shop but have some good stuff, I always make a point to stop when I am down that way.

Am I missing something? Why would one come all the way to Alaska to look at a gun shop?


Best time of year to be outside! Go fishing, hike a trail, learn some history etc. I see no point in going to a run of the mill gun shop with high prices etc, or small old shops like boondocks?? I guess I’m jaded by living in AK and find the shopping sort of uninspiring.

And yes the drive you mention is easily doable. If you want scenic though I’d say cut down in Delta junction to paxson then drive the Denali Hwy. should probably be open. (I don’t think there is much to see in Tok or Glennallen unless you are going to McCarthy as mentioned or down to Valdez.

The other way to drive is to the Kenai, may be time for the early run on the Russian River. Seward or Homer is always a good sea town visit and lots of things to see….
