I am heading to Namibia in May/June next year for a plains game hunt, after speaking to a couple references they say not to go when the full moon is out as it was a lot harder to hunt because apparently the animals were out feeding all night, and were a lot harder to find.

Sorry this may be a stupid question but i thought i wolud ask just incase.

Cheers Clint:)

It's true the hunting isn't as good with a full moon out, but it is Africa and you should still have a fairly good hunt.

Hi Clint yes to an exstint this is true last year I hunted durring a full moon and had to hunt hard due to the animals not moving as much durring the day. However they do move and by the end of the hunt the 4 animals on my list that I had not taken Duiker, Steenbok, Bushpig and Bushbuck and traded them for a beautiful Nyala. Of course I left them on my to get list and went back this year and made up for them. Bob

Its a shame when you have to go back! :D :D ;D

Yeah and I'm probably going to have to go back next year for the Caracal and the Bushpig I did't get this year. Damn the luck! :eyebrow:

The solution to this dilemma is to book for a full month!

There is no bad time to hunt in Africa. That being said, I feel like I see more animals around a new moon. I try to book my hunts a week before to a week after a new moon. Obviously we can't all go at that time. It would be interesting to hear what the Outfitters/PH's say about this.

I was advised by my PH that if you want to hunt the night animals, jackal, caracal, etc., go with the dark moon nights for best results.

from experience I agree with that 100%

I agree 100%, went last yr to SA in the wrong moon phase (this was the only time that would work for us...) and we did great, the 3 of us shot our target animals and had time to spare!!:thumb:

I just came back from SA about 9 days ago, and we were there for 16 days. I did not believe that a full moon would have any influence on hunting in Africa whatsoever, but I was very wrong. The closer we got to the full moon, the less animals we were seeing, especially during the morning hunts. I saw it for myself, as I wanted to know the answer for myself. The fact is that now any hunt I book, anywhere in fact, will be as far from full moon phases as possible, to give me the best opportunity for success. It made that big of a difference in the amount of animals we were seeing, even in Africa, that it made me a firm believer.

I am in the early planning stages of my next safari and I too specified for the first time a wish to avoid the moon as much as possible. I never really paid any attention to it but am becoming a believer too. Here in NA I know we always tried to hunt around a full moon. I remember my dad always whining about the moon keeping the critters up eating all night and sleeping the morning away. I just never figured it made that much difference in Africa.

Wheels come on play fair only a month ? - why not do it right three months and use the full moon phases for R&R back in Joberg or PE ?

Well hell dreaming is free - which is all I can afford @ present

Ok i agree, even though we had a great hunt in the wrong moon phase last yr (we did see less animals in the full moon, but the ones we shot were great trophies..) i to believe a person should try and plan your hunt avoiding the full moon phase. A group of us are heading over next yr and our plan is to be there sometime in the dark moon phase...

If you have a choice, hunt during a dark moon. If you don't have a choice then so be it. The hunt will still be a blast and you may have to work just a tab bit harder.

Thanks for all your replys guys will be very handy to know for my hunt next year. Take it easy:)

You are right.....I don't think big enough. Three months is a lot better.

I just saw the video of your ammobroom did you invent this? Neat idea.

I was in same situation..... After hearing from all the guys on here, I opted for the last quarter to new moon time to hunt. Some say it doesn't make much difference, then many senior members & PH's said that it does. So having had the choice.... I steered clear of the full moon. Better safe sorry. I'm going May 2014 as well. Good luck to ya'!

i just hunted S africa with my bow on a full moon a week ago..(june 2013) sure the animals change thier pattern..but your PH should be able to adjust your schedule..and one thing is for sure--they have to drink so waterhole can be your best bet to score on a full moon. i took 2 impala, 2 warthog, 1 zebra, and 1 blue wildbeast with my bow. good luck

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
