He is talking about Australia, Crocs were shot right up to 1971 in the NT & 1974 in Queensland, there were plenty still even then but very smart & nocturnal mostly, even around Darwin & just out of town, now days full time Rangers & Trappers working to take out most big Croc in the Darwin Harbour & problem Crocs in Cattle country.

Actually the .303Brit was an illegal caliber in the NT with out a special permit, not that a lot of people kept to the law !
I understood he was talking about Australia. I can’t recall the name of the river leaving Darwin, but my guide told me there were photos of troops swimming in it during WW2 no worry of crocs but said a person wouldn’t make it across today. I was really impressed how wild the Northern Territory is today. We saw tons of crocs hunting buffalo, many in the 12-14 foot range waiting on edge of floodplain. I hunted during wet season in January on a large ranch.

I think those Soldiers were not too smart & maybe lucky !

Was it the Mary River & you went out to Carmor Plains with Matt ?

Holy Cow hunting in January, you must of been keen bud, terrible place at that time of year, were you in the Air Boat ?

I used to shoot Buffalo for a Meat works on those plains way back in the Dream Time, even a few years after commercial hunting finished, 14-16Footers were seen all over, so were there the whole time, had more manners & respect back then, now you see them in full daylight & sticking half way out of the water cruising around, in the old days only see the eyes, horns & small Vee shape !

You should of seen our guiding camp at Gan Gan two days drive or fly in, that was super wild like the Congo !

Yes, I went January 2017 at Carmor plains. Unfortunately matt was not well at time, so I never met him, but my guide was great. I really enjoyed hunting January. Everything was vibrant green and a nice change from winter in USA. The buffalo were primarily in the forest not on the floodplains, so I thought it was a great hunt. I took two. He had some lighter vehicles that let us get pretty much anywhere. It was very difficult getting a pig though with tall grass. Went out on airboat and caught barrimundi on final day. I know there were some huge crocs around from past trapping photos.

I can only imagine the remote areas your Dad saw and the stories he had. By the late 1940’s the crocs had already been pushed far from civilization.

To him it was just another job. It paid better than sugar cane cutting but was just as hard work. Shortly after that he joined the army and spent 3 years fighting in the Korean war. Ended up 30 years in the military and retired in 1976.
He had a lot of interesting stories to tell of his younger days

Here's the target for the NorthForks - 25yds off a bag, iron sights. Hunting leopards over dogs the range won't be more than that.

Flew in an airshow in Smyrna years ago, beautiful country.

Best regards,

Franco
