I've been looking for a 404 Jeffery for a long time, but with my relatively frugal New England ways, needed to find a deal. A few weeks ago I found one at an auction, LNIB and got it for a fair price--much to my wife's chagrin!

Why a .404? The combination of manageable recoil, enough power for the big stuff and the history of a classic cartridge. I considered a .375 and have used one several times, but there was something about the .404.

Now to start looking for a buff hunt....

Congrats sir looks like you got yourself a very nice rifle.

I didn't know CZ made that model in a 404? If you don't mind, what do they run cost wise? Where did you buy it?

Have you been able to do any testing with it and will it cycle a full magazine at speed?

Beautiful rifle...I'm a fan of the 404 myself.

Welcome to the club , congrats on a nice looking rile .

Great looking wood! I am jealous, I have been thinking about this exact rifle recently!

Atticus, as you have noticed on this forum, the 404 Jeffery is a sought after caliber, you really bought yourself an excellent rifle, it is in an excellent caliber as well..it is perfect...welcome to the 404 Jeffery members club...enjoy your rifle , use it when ever you can, even to hunt plains game ...(y)(y)

Lockingblock,

I haven't fired it yet. I picked it up last week but have been getting ready for upland bird season. I likely wont get to it until bird season is over. I'm not sure about cycling but have heard that this model may need to be slicked up. As I bought it at auction, I was thinking of calling Triple River, where I believe they actually come from, to see what was done prior to sale. The bolt was jeweled so maybe they did some action work too. The rifle seems virtually unfired. I'm not sure how I feel about the single set trigger yet, and I have to pick up some rings (thinking Alaska arms QDs) and a scope (Nikon monarch 1-5x20).

As for price, I think the CZ Safari classic in 404J goes for around $3000 but I am really not sure. I got it for less than that even after figuring in the auction fee shipping and insurance.

I bought it at Rock Island Auction. I have bid on 404s there before, but have never even gotten close. The last time it was on a rifle made by W.J. Jeffery & Co, it went for $8000+-; I had bid $1800---shows what i know....

Congrats on the new rifle!

Very nice rifle!!

Excellent Rifle, Kinda looks like mine

Enjoy it.I sure like the caliber easy to shoot well and to reload for.

Congrats. Are you going to treat this as an unfired gun and go through some kind of barrel break-in procedure? Have you decided on what ammo or bullet to use?

Based on that price list, which I assume doesn't include extras like bolt jeweling that must be additional, I got a smoking deal. That price list may even make my wife happy...

I will treat it as a new rifle and look into loads, etc., after grouse season.

Very nice acquisition - well done.

I'm thinking of building a 404J on a CZ 550.

I understand they now use L Walther barrels on the Safari Classic II - I'm curious to know what profile yours is.

Would be very grateful if you'd be willing to take a diameter measurement at the the muzzle and post here.

Have a good one.

Tintin, send "VonGruff" a PM, he is the 404 guru living in your part of the world.

Tintin,

I'll try, although I'm not sure I have the equipment for an accurate measurement. I believe -based on box labels-this rifle came out of CZ in 2013 and Missouri in 2015 so I dont believe it's a safari Classic II.

Hey Odinsraven. Is that post from Jefferry 404 legitimate? I don't know him. Thanks!

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
