Just got back from a hunt with PH's Ross Hare and Johnathan Rademeyer at Monterra Safaris. The goal was to complete the Black Gold package and had the surprise of being able to complete the spiral horn slam. Along with a couple of other extraordinary plains game specimens. Read on for pics and short details of the hunts.
We started off the hunt looking for the Golden Wildebeest. The "gold" of the black/gold package. So, taking what the bush gives you I took a very nice gemsbuck
Gemsbuck.jpg

We were able to silent stalk to within about 30 yards of the resting gemsbuck before the wind changed and she stood up to look at us. The frontal shot was true and she didn't run far. Maybe the golden will happen tomorrow.
The next day we began our search for the golden. So true to form and true to taking what the bush gives you another frontal shot at about 40 yards and I have the black part of the black/gold package, a very nice sable!

Of course i am leaving out all the fun and interesting details of this hunt because I type way too slow. So tomorrow we go for the golden.
Tomorrow coms and off we go to find a golden. A new tradition is now established on this hunt. We say we are going for a golden but we take what the bush gives us and this time it is a monster bushbuck!

With this beauty in the salt we decide that tomorrow we will go for anything except the golden wildebeest (wink).
You guessed it we finally got this absolutely beautiful golden. Besides the gorgeous shimmering coat this guy was really wide also.

The black/gold package was complete! Unfortunately for my budget while we were roaming around in the bush we had seen an exceptional blesbuck so we decided to try for it too. We found the right group standing and laying around under some trees and when the right one decided to stand up and walk clear of his companions my shot was true and we had this beautiful blesbuck

I now considered my hunt a complete success and was very happy with the results. The guys at Monterra however had other plans. Ross and Johnathan decided that since 3 species of the spiral horn antelopes had all been taken at Monterra (this is my 3rd safari with them) that I simply couldn't go home needing an eland to complete the slam without at least trying for the completion. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse and will be forever grateful for so on the last day we tried for the eland and with very little time to spare - yep the shot was true at about 80 yards and the spiral horn slam was complete. My gosh I am one fortunate fellow.

For those of you that like to see scores of each animal I include the pic of the greenscores measured at Monterra, unofficial but very educated measurements.

Truly exceptional.
Needless to say, I can't speak highly enough of the crew at Monterra. My wife accompanied me this time and they took exceptional care of her as she is not a hunter but loved birding with knowledgeable people, seeing the animals on game drives, and they had a spa day to boot. So, all in all a truly wonderful 9 days in the Limpopo province on the Limpopo river with Monterra.

Thanks for sharing :D Beers:

Congrats and thanks for sharing! Dream bushbuck!

Well done Jim I see there is a buffalo cow on your score board any story behind it?

It actually is a young bull that was severely injured in a fight with another bull and had to be put down as a mercy to the animal

Congrats on your hunt !

Great bushbuck.

I see you chose a skull mount for the Eland. I waited a year trying to decide how I was going to mount mine. When I saw a shoulder mount of one, I chose to go skull mount. It's a big beast.

Congratulations on a great accomplishment!!! Well done!!!

Great animals. This outfit has always intrigued me since they showed up here. I've chatted with them a few times at the shows. Seems like great folks

The people at Monterra are good folks. Friendly and funny yet professional in the field with a high conservation ethic. A variety of terrain all hunted from one lodge and you are the only party on the property. And you can see the quality of the animals in my hunting reports. You won't be disappointed if you should hunt with them.

Here's the target for the NorthForks - 25yds off a bag, iron sights. Hunting leopards over dogs the range won't be more than that.

Flew in an airshow in Smyrna years ago, beautiful country.

Best regards,

Franco
