Exclusively for hunting cartridges

My battery now is 6.5x55, 30-06 and 375 H&H. Of the three I believe the 375 is the only cartridge that has no military pedigree. I like all three for their history, but I got to wondering: what would my battery look like of I only used cartridges that were exclusively developed and used for hunting? Could I duplicate the spectrum with classic, but exclusively hunting, cartridges? Rare ones like 275 H&H came for mind, as well as more familiar ones like 9.3x62 and 300 H&H. But, would the 275 Rigby qualify as I think it is the same as the German military round? Not sure.

Anyways, what would such a battery look like to you?

Here's the catch, the 7x57 was a military round. So, is it possible to build a battery with exclusively hunting cartridges in the collection? (for this discussion I am considering a cartridge military if it was used as by a country for their fighting force, as opposed to occasional use by individuals)

Once you get into the smaller bores there won't be many classic cartridges that weren't military in origin. The 318 Westley Richards and 333 Jeffery are getting close to the 9.3x62. One that does stand out is the Super Thirty or 300H&H. Otherwise you are going to the modern 243, 708, 7mm mag type cartridges.

Tough call if you also weed out the cartridges derived from military brass such as the 260 Remington and 7mm-08 from the 308 Win/7.62 NATO round and a few from the 30-06 too.

Avoiding that and going with something I can find in left-handed I'd say the 6.5 Creedmoor, the 300 Win Mag and the 375 Ruger.

Oh wait, the Roberts is based off of the 7x57...rats...6.5x284 Norma? It is tough to identify small bore rifles with a nice history to them.

Yes, but only in recent years.

.250 Savage, (1lb - 300lb Game) .300 H&H, (100lb - 1500lb non-DG) and .375 H&H (everything else). I believe this would give you the biggest cross section of game that could be hunted with the least number of rifles.

.308 Norma isn't a classic, but it is a good option. Otherwise, .300 H&H, as stated by the rest.

the 6.5x57 is based on the 7x57... I don't know if this was one of the rules or not... if not, then I would replace .250 Savage on mine with a .270 Winchester or .280 Remington.

This may well be "just me", but I think virtually all of these non-belted cases (excluding the WSMs & WSSMs) can trace their ancestry back to the 7x57 Look at the case dimensions. All were developed from someone tinkering with the original 7x57. Including the 8mm Mauser and .30-06 which parented a LOT of modern cartridges.

That being said, where DO we go from here?

Trying to think what is all in my safes.. Are we just talking classics or everythingThe 505 Gibbs stands out first, then 458 Lott, 404 Jeff, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H and and , 9.3x62. How about 338 Win Mag? 300 RUM I believe based on the 404 Jeff, 300 H&H, 32 Winchester Special is an old American classic to me and in the only family gun I have from my paternal Grandfather, 45 long colt?, I don't actually have a 30-30 but would that count?And a special one to me is the 256 win mag based off the 357 mag..... I have two of the Ruger Hawkeyes made in 1963... I believe the ammo was last commercially manufactured in about 1967???

Non classic might include 416 Rem Mag, 375 Ruger, 338 Marlin Express, 44 rem mag. 357 mag. Of course one of my favorites is the 6.5 Creedmoor... Oh how about 300 WSM? 454 Casull.

And not rifles but I would contend the second most used hunting cartrige in the World... the 12 gauge shotgun! It was used in the military but wouldn't that have been adopted from civilian use much like the 300 win mag? (Got one of those near the front of the safe So 20 gauge and .410.... And I don't have any yet, but 16 and 28 gauge... May even need a 10 gauge someday just because....

And then lets not forget probably the most common and widely used hunting cartridge of all time.... .22 Long Rifle! And of course the relatives such as 22 mag and 17 HMR.

This is a rimmed round introduced by Holland & Holland in the early 1920s and was originally only available as a proprietary cartridge for their own double rifles. Again this cartridge was an excellent deer round that will hold its own with many other 6mm rounds.
