EAW Scope Mounts

What are your thoughts on EAW scope bases and which styles do you prefer?

I have fitted a number of them to customer rifles and the range is mind boggling. When correctly fitted, they allow several scopes to be fitted to the same rifle without losing zero. They are very user friendly and will function flawlessly for many years.

Very well made and something for every application. They are expensive but, you get what you pay for.

Ive got a Ziess Diatal-D with the rail mount that I want to put on a sporterized 03-A3 and I'm trying to put some info together to figure out how to do this.
As of now, I'm thinking that I'l use the roll-off mounts as I've got Weaver style bases on the rifle

I am not sure how many suppliers make hardware that will work on a rail mount. The only ones I have seen are EAW and of course custom made mounts. I went the custom route on one of my rifles but machined the rail off from the objective bell on the Zeiss I had at the time, to get the mounts as low as possible.

The roll off mounts did not seem that sturdy to me and I needed the rifle to take the occasional knock. It was a lend out rifle and one I used for culling for the market on larger plains game.

Gentlemen,

I am residing in Namibia (Southern Africa) thus limited supply possibilities. I have ordered myself a Mauser MO3 African PH in 375 HH from Rosenthals in Windhoek, and a Leupold VX*R 4-12x40 Ballistic firedot scope.

Now my question:
Due to the fact that i am forking out a lump for the above combination - i am dead-set to get only the best scope basis / mounts available. In your respected opinions what will you suggest should be my course of action?
1. Request Rosenthal's to order from Mauser their specific customs basis and mounts?
2. Request Rosenthal's to order EAW mounts from South Africa?

Will sincerely appreciate your guidance and opinions - especially from you gents that regularly hunt .375 HH and up with scopes.

I would mount the scope in Thor bases and rings if there is no need for a detachable mounting system. You can pay more but I don't think you can buy better. Rosenthal should have stock as well. I do not agree with your choice of telescope but that is a debatable point.

Let me add - i will be hunting mainly eland / kudu and Oryx with distances between 80 - 200 m. There is a buff in the pipeline but the scope will be taken off for this (ad) venture

I have two Mauser M03 PH. One with .300 Wind and .416 REM and the other one with .375 H&H and .458 Lott. M03rifle is very well designed and built. I am 165 cm (5' 6") tall and weight 56 kg (124 lb) but I can shoot .458 Lott comfortably. I was hunting with Felix Marnewecke at Nyae Naye conservancy, Namibia this past May with M03 in .416 REM.

Lets get back to your question. M03 comes prepared for Mauser Double Square Mount (DSM). I do not think you can use any other mounts other than DSM? It is a very good mount though, scope is easily mounted, locked or detached, with optimum return to zero accuracy. Good luck.

I use a Lynx LX 4-12x40 mounted with Warne QR rings on my .375 and have never had any problems at all. The 4x is nice for bush work and the 12x is great for longer shots. The 12x is also very handy when you're setting up from the bench.

I have been quoted by Rosenthals for the DSB mount in addition to the rifle. So if i understand you correctly, no matter what scope i choose, it can be mounted on the DSB with rings comming with that particular scope?
Do i read you correct?

When one builds rifles, the rifle is usually supplied ready to go. In other words, it is complete with optics and, usually, accessories. If something goes wrong or needs adjustment, the client brings the rifle back, complete with optics and accessories.

This makes the builder acutely aware of which brands to avoid because they are returned more frequently than other brands. On that basis, there are some brands I stopped supplying. If a component has more than a one in twenty failure rate, I keep clear of it.

For the money spent on a particular brand of scope, there are very reliable instruments available. For example, I have never sent a Meopta, Zeiss, Kahles or Swarovski scope to be repaired. In the cheaper rifle-scope lines I also have preferences based how frequently I had to deal with instruments coming back to me with legitimate factory faults.

I would, for similar money as what you are spending on the Leupold, rather spend on a Meopta.

I have EAW bases and rings on my Sauer 90 and it's the best quick detach system I've seen so far compared to what other manufacturers are selling. I do remove my scope each time I clean the rifle and I never had an issue with keeping my zero.

I highly recommend them and would have EAW on all my rifles if they weren't so pricey.

I totally agree with you as I also have EAW mounts and rings on my Sauer 90 in 375 H&H too. I have a Swarovski Z6i 1.7-10x 42 on. I always remove the scope every time after shooting, traveling or hunting. I have taken this setup to Africa six times in the past two years without accuracy issue.
