We normally read about the horror stories that happen with taxidermy, whether in the US or abroad. This is one of those horror stories with a "happy ending". This was a true test of the reputation, integrity and backing from this one South African taxidermy. Completely change my mood and I realized and was great to know that there are still businesses out there who do care about the customer and go out of their way to make things right.

This post is about Lauriston Taxidermy, in the Eastern Cape. As some of you know (read my report) I hunted with Game-4-Africa, and Wik in 2025. I took a friend to Africa for the first time. Wik highly recommended we use Lauriston for our finished taxidermy. I had used them back in 2022 but just for dip and pack and everything was great and had no issues whatsoever.

After a year, my anticipation was growing knowing that my mounts were almost done, and almost to their final destination our home. Crate finally left the Eastern Cape, and since it had one Buffalo (big-5), it had to fly through Turkish Airlines, and it would add a day or two to the transit time. Since I had already waited a year, what's another day or two.

Crate arrives in Atlanta, GA, and Coppersmith quickly picked it up and took the crate to their warehouse. A couple of days later, my crate was cleared and ready to ship to my residence via a trucking company. At this time, I would like to point out that Coppersmith for the second time, they have dropped the ball with my shipments. First time, my crate was not picked up from the Turkish Airline warehouse, and over $1200 later in storage fees, Coppersmith basically wash their hands, even though it was cleared that it was their fault for not picking up the crate.

Which brings me to this year's shipment. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, crate was supposed to be picked on Monday (3 Aug 2026), with an expected delivery to my residence by Wed, Thu at the latest. I called on Tuesday to see if my crate was picked up, to find out that it was not, with an assurance that it would be picked up. By this time, I've received an e-mail from Coppersmith showing who the trucking company was and an e-mail address with a tracking number. On Thursday (6 Aug 2026) I called Coppersmith to inquire about the crate, and I was rudely transferred to the warehouse. The warehouse manager was very apologetic and explained to me what had happened, and that he would make sure that if the trucking company came by that my crate would get picked up.

I'm a bit frustrated, if you want to call it that. I called the trucking company, spoke to one of their dispatchers, and she told me that they had been to Coppersmith three times to pick up my crate and that no one knew where it was. Now, I'm feeling fear, anger, and who know what else, fearing the worst about my crate. I did tell the dispatcher that the crate was there and to please try to pick up one more time. She said that if the crate was not there that they would not try to pick up again. I called Coppersmith and made sure that someone was going to release my crate.

I was an office manager for a freight company, and if we had a crate/cargo ready to move, we made sure that someone was on the phone with the trucking company until the cargo was transferred. Seems like someone did not do that with Coppersmith.

Well, now my crate is moving, and it was scheduled for delivery on Monday (10 Aug 2026). Yay, it's moving. Crate arrived, and driver delivered all the way into my garage.

I'll break here, and will be back with rest, with pictures.

Second part.

Crate is in the garage, and I get busy to remove the 10 1/2 million screws used on the crate. Here is a picture of the crate.

As I remove the top lid, I noticed the first sign of damage. One of my Impala Euro mounts broke and busted up during transit.

Ok, not too bad, the other one (my granddaughter's gift) was fine. (y)

Then comes the true horror part. I had asked Lauriston to make a couple of ashtrays and book end from the Buff ft,and provided them with a couple of pictures. This is what I wanted.

and this is what I received.

Well to say that I was angry is an understatement. I immediately got on the computer and wrote Lauriston an e-mail with what I had received, and the pictures. I also reached out to Wik (via Whatapp) so he could see what had happened. He suggested I receive a full refund, and that he would reach out to Lauriston first thing in the morning.

I know this has been all bad news so far, but let me tell you, that the rest of the work Lauriston Taxidermy did was short of outstanding. The Buffalo and Waterbuck look great. I also did not realize how big this mount was going to be. My wife has issues with this, but we are working it. LOL!!!!! Here are some pictures of the Buffalo mount.

Another angle.

I also had Lauriston make a purse from the back skin of the Buffalo, and to say that I gain some serious brownie points it's an understatement. Here is picture of the purse on the Buffalo. LOL!!!

Well, there was some good out of all the bad. So, my mood changed dramatically, and I was hopeful that this would work out. To tell you that I slept, well, truthfully, I didn't. My mind was restless all night, expecting the worst. Something I had experience with my first safari, and how the Taxidermist basically told me to F-off, and the outfitter was no better in trying to help me.

Woke up this morning and the first thing I did was to check my e-mails and see if I had anything from Wik. About 30 min later, I check my e-mail and there was a reply from Michelle, from Lauriston Taxidermy. I've been dealing with her for the past year. I'm going to cut and past her reply to me.

"Thank you for your email.
I'm glad you received your trophies. I'm so sorry that you have damage on your Impala Skull on shield.

Regarding your other items - I apologize profusely on behalf of the Taxidermy.
This is completely unacceptable, and inexcusable. I am quite speechless to be honest!

Unfortunately, I gave the detailed instructions through to the relevant department manager, and presumed everything was done as instructed.
I am truly sorry about this. I will be taking steps to ensure this nonsense does not happen again. I know this does not help with your received trophies through.

Please could you let me know the cost to repair your Skull & Horns on Shield.
Can I pay you a refund on the Impala legs / Buffalo legs?
Please let me know what works best for you.
Once again, please accept my sincere apology.

This is not how we like to do business, and we aim to please our clients.
I'm sorry this was not the case with your shipment.

Kindly let me know the cost to repair, and how I can refund you on these items.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Michelle"

To say that I was blown away by this reply it's an understatement. Wik had told me that Lauriston was a stand-up business, and that he knew that his reputation was on the line if something went bad and they didn't stand behind their work.

So, something that started as the bad dream we all here fear, turned out to have a happy ending after all. To say that I am extremely grateful for Lauriston (Michelle) commitment to their customer service and to ensure the customer is happy with their work is without a doubt top notch. To offer to pay to fix something and to offer a refund is going above and beyond. We've all read those horror stories, and there are many.

I hope this helps someone who might be on the fence about using Lauriston Taxidermy. This proved that Lauriston stand behind their work and their reputation.

Michelle & Wik, thank you both for your assistance in making this right. I know most of the time we get hung up on the negatives, and we forget to highlight the positives. I hope I did justice to what happened, and how it was handled.

Following. I was a week behind you hunting there and have a similar shipment in its final stages. Also using Lauriston/Coppersmith, but to DFW.

As you can see with the Buffalo, I am very happy with their work, and how the Buffalo, Waterbuck and everything else were packed. I'll post picture of the Waterbuck once it's on the wall.

Congrats on receiving your trophies, always exciting. Luckily the big things worked out.
The buffalo feet is relatively easy to fix but it shouldn't be that way.

Got a partially broken European mount myself but was more my fault handling it when unwrapping I think or it was slightly damaged. Luckily a little glue and it looked perfect again. Hopefully yours will work out the same with a little glue, did you try?

I hunted with Wik in 2022, a buddy went along with me. Since he was on his first safari, and getting lots of things mounted, I went ahead and had 4 small mounts done. Our experience with Lauriston was nothing short of professional, things came timely, I would definitely recommend them to others based on my experience.

I am very sorry for the drama and frustration you had to deal with. It is refreshing to receive an email from them admitting mistakes and trying to sort out a way to be fair, that doesn't always happen!

The mounts you have shown us look very nice, and I just love that buffalo mount, WOW!

The buffalo looks great! And I’m pleased to hear that Wik and Michelle were able to resolve things.

Will your buffalo legs be turned into bookends by a taxidermist in the US now?

Will you be able to get the impala repaired?
Presumably your other euro mounts were undamaged.

I ask as Lauriston are doing 4 euro mounts for me at the moment including a buffalo and I would be devastated if they got broken!

Glad it worked out for you but I’m extremely disappointed with the way Coppersmiths acted, I’ve always thought they were a stand up company and have used them several times with no issues. Them not getting your crate from Turkish Airlines and having you to pay a storage fee is inexcusable.
I’ve also used Lauriston and they were very professional and did very good work. Your buff is outstanding and seeing the purse on his nose actually made me laugh!

You mentioned the number of screws in the crate, I noticed the excessive use of screws in my crate as well, enough to build multiple shooting houses or a small house!

I had some really terrible issues with a certain Eastern Cape taxidermist (not yours) from my first two safaris. Yes, don't expect safari operators to help when there's problems because they won't, especially if the taxidermist is "preferred" by safari operator. They are in business together.

Your impala skull did not get damaged during shipment. It fell apart because it was overcooked when boiling. That's why the teeth are all missing. Better keep an eye on the other skull!

Hunters & Collectors in Port Elizabeth (or whatever it's been renamed) does my work now and they are excellent (with skulls anyway). Kevin removes all horns from all antelope skulls, even black wildebeest. And skulls are always completely clean and whitened (not painted like the first taxidermist!). Not overcooked.

Dealing with freight companies and airline warehouses and brokerages = fifty ways to take a screwing! It is a nightmare! I'm personally bringing back 2023 skulls when I return from 5th safari this summer. We'll see how it goes. I'm sure it will be a headache but after last time I figure I've got nothing to lose but my third gemsbuck, my fifth springbuck, and fourth impala. If it becomes too much hassle they can go in the trash.

I have not gotten that far yet. Yes, everything came out wonderful and the other Euro mounts are fine, two Kudus and an Impala for my granddaughter.

You’re crate will be relatively small, my crate was 81” long :ROFLMAO:

Here is some other stuff made from the Buffalo back skin. BTW, the valet tray was made from the Buffalo scrotum. :ROFLMAO: Oh and I didn’t realize how soft Buffalo leather is.

I just looked in the McKenzie taxidermy catalog and they have a reproduction impala skull , don’t know if it will work for you or not. $68.50 needs an intact skullcap.

Appreciate the info, Ive heard so much about copper smiths that Im surprised they dropped the ball ,"crate" on your shipment. Maybe they're getting to big and losing their personal care. my shipment had screws with 3 different style heads on them so I had to keep changing bits.
and it looks like that wall has room for at least 3 more buff !

LAURISTON, " just a note to myself"

I’m going to take it to my local guy and see. But not a bad idea. Do you have a link??

My wife who BTW, is my biggest fan, said “ I think you’ve reached your limit. The walls are not strong enough”. :ROFLMAO: But, I after I gave her the purse she walked outside to our covered patio to show me where she wants the Kudu Euro mounts. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Good morning. I see that you had a Sauer 202 for sale for $3,000. Did you sell it at that price?
I have one for sale as well. I listed it (on here ) at $3,000 as well. Is the price high, low or right where it should be?

Thanks. Alex. [redacted] in case you want to call me to discuss further. I appreciate your time help and support.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.
