FYI

I received an email from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters about this topic. Apparently, the feds have released a report about the use of lead bullets and sinkers etc. OFHA has a survey for its members. From what I read there is a need to educate the folks in Ottawa.

When fishing as a boy, we held those spare lead split-shot sinkers in our mouths for hours. If we had not, perhaps we would have been a little smarter, been hedge fund managers instead of hunters......FWB

Ya know, this is really ridiculous!! Yes, lead is toxic in large quantities, but so is a lot of other stuff. Take a look on a bottle of multivitamins and you'll see a number of ingredients in trace amounts that the body needs to function. Iron is one of them. Without iron, the body will not be able to transport oxygen to the cells, yet too much iron is toxic. For that matter, oxygen in too high a concentration is bad for you. (BTW, ask a welder what happens when you get grease and high pressure oxygen together.) And so is water for that matter. There have been several deaths in high school sports linked to drinking too much water that it dilutes the electrolytes in the blood stream causing death.

I know we're not cows, but pastures have toxic plants in them from time to time and cows do eat them. If only a few are eaten, nothing happens, but eat enough and the cow will die.

Focus should be on educating the public and let them do what they are going to do anyway. Remember the Tide Pods?

Everything in moderation!

Hmmm...I still hold pellets in my mouth while shooting my spring piston rifle, but...there’s nothing wrong with me...with me...with me...o_O!

Fun aside too much of anything is probably not good for you.

I think that as us old farts move on that there will be more and more restrictions on lead bullets and lead in general.

Look at the US Federal waterfowl rules and regulations, you haven't been able to use lead shot for a long time now. Even if you are hunting upland game on a Federal management area you can not use lead shot. Now I haven't read anything about lead bullets but if you can not expect for a regulation to come up where you can't.

As for lead bullets I have read a few reports on the California Condor recovery where Arizona, Nevada, and Utah are trying to get sportsmen to use non-lead rifle rounds and California has outlawed lead rounds all together for big game hunting. Since the new regulations the condor is coming back and the ones that they recapture and take blood samples from are showing very little lead in their system. Then there are the studies where they show how much lead is dispersed inside of a big game animal when shot with a lead round. Even jacket bullets the lead will come apart and disperse itself in quite a bit of the meat according to x-rays that are taken of the carcasses. So just think of how much lead you have ingested in your lifetime if you are like me and eat a lot of wild game that has been shot with a lead bullet.

Even when I was working 30 or so years ago and handled lead quite often the company required me to wear protective clothing and gloves and later on even a respirator if I was going to be filing or brushing it where I could inhale the particles.

So for me I actually think that it is a good thing that more states or countries are looking at the harmful effects that lead can have on a person by using lead rifle bullets. I myself have pretty much moved over to copper bullets in all the rifles that I shoot but there are a couple where I still use good old lead bullets and all my pistols shoot lead round.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
