Many times, reading about hunting in different places, as forums, books or magazines, I find different denominations, for the people in charge to take ahead the hunting or people involved in the hunting industry.......

To me they are all the same thing.

Outfitter: The guy organizing and selling hunts. Pretty well universal.

Professional Hunter: The guy actually in charge of the hunt on a daily basis. Typically, an African term.

Master Hunting Guide: A designation in Namibia.

Professional Hunter:
may only conduct hunts on all farms / ranches, provided they have written permission from the owner of the property independent of whether the farm / ranch is registered or not.

Master Hunting Guide: may only conduct hunts on their own farm(s) / ranch(es) duly registered, plus two additional registered hunting farms / ranch

Hunting Guide: may only conduct hunts on their own farm(s) 7 ranch(es), duly registered as a hunting farm(s) / ranch(es).

Big Game Hunter: only these PH's may conduct hunts with guests for Elephant, Rhinoceros, Buffalo and Lion


Full hunting guide: Something I have only seen when referencing someone who is Dangerous Game Qualified. That is they have the ability to conduct hunts for all types of game.

Wow, I did not know about the legal status.

My only addition is that I have not met a "Guide" in North America that has the schooling of a Professional Hunter in Africa. I would never call my African PH a "guide"

Here in Argentina it is the same........a Hunting Guide, can do all the referents things about hunting.....can do all the hunt......!!!!

Good point. It is pretty minimal qualification here in comparison.

To obtain a guide designation, you must: (1) be a Canadian citizen or entitled to work in Canada, (2) be employed by an outfitter in Alberta, and (3) submit a letter of recommendation to APOS from your employer.

Basically, any Muppet hired by an Outfitter can be a guide.

Unless things have changed drastically over the years the schooling and qualifications to be a PH in South Africa are very minimal in comparison to the lengthy training requirements and testing necessary to become a PH in, say, Zimbabwe. Therefore, a PH designation alone will not always make things equal.

Agreed. And I don't want to denigrate the very capable NA guides out there. I did want to just highlight the fundamental difference in approach

Yes, you are absolutely correct with that statement. And by that same rationale even the Muppets you referred to in an earlier post would be on that same equal footing. However, I was referring to the comparative level of training and testing required to gain the PH designation and how it varies from country to country. That basic requirement is not always even close to being equal. That's why in my view it's more about experience rather than the designation.

The initial formal educational training in various countries for most professions does not even begin to equate. They will however, be allowed to practice in their country.

Have to agree, licensing is the basic requirement, then that experience thing comes in.
