AWD vehicles in snow opinions

@Rick Cox
The XC70 is another brilliant AWD with more safety features than you can poke a stick at. More air bags than a room full of mother in-laws. The only thing in Australia is the price.

Oh Trust me Bob, I bought it used... in 2006. It's been a great car, got 335,000 Km on it now - running strong.

I just went through the same thing with my mother in november. She is in sw wisconsin and is now 73. I thought about looking at subaru's and some others. She ended up with a 2020 Ford escape awd. The subaru was eliminated because all the dealers around here are in the bigger cities. She doesn't enjoy traveling to these as much now and probably will enjoy it less in the future. She lives in a small town of 600 people and the nearest dealer in 7 miles down the road to an another town around the same size. Out of the others she test drove she felt the visibility was better than the other choices. It may not have been my choice, but I had to keep reminding myself this wasn't for me and what worked for her was the most important.

Thanks for all the help guys. I took her to test drive a few different vehicles and she really liked the subaru outback and forester. The local cars were over priced so she did some looking and found a lower mileage 2008 outback in Duluth on CL yesterday. We went and got it today from a private seller for a very fair price. It drives nice, it's super clean and got upper 20's mpg on a long drive home.

Man do I know the feeling. You just have to bite your tongue. That should be a nice vehicle for her though.

CJW,

I've got a jeep renegade, 2019. i put good winter tires on it, (studded) and it works amazing. i have a steep driveway that a surprising amount of other vehicles have a hard time getting up when it is iced up (worst in march/april).

i live in alaska so see a bit of snow. really like the rig.

We've owned both a Toyote 4runner AWD & a Highlander AWD. The 4runner will handle deeper snow diue to more ground clearance..

We have done 6"+ in the Highlander with the winter tires. Pretty much any AWD vehicle will do 2" of snow now issues, especially if you have snow tires.

I was about to comment how much we love our KIA Sorrento AWD (I've had it on forest service roads in 12" of snow while pulling a small trailer and did not get stuck or even have any major issues, and it has been a very reliable vehicle as my wife's daily driver) and attempt to encourage you to take a look at one, BUT.... you can't go wrong with a Subaru. Fantastic vehicles.
Nice purchase!

I think she'll like it. My wife is on her 3rd Outback. I've driven it on long trips and it is a comfortable car.

They are so popular here in Asheville that we are jokingly called Subieville.

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
