My wife and I took her visiting mother out for a stroll to see some of the magnificent wet season countryside. After about a kilometre they’d had enough and turned for home, while I continued on. I was hoping to find something to feed our dog.

I also enjoy trying to photograph birds, and found a lone brolga, which is unusual as they mostly live in pairs or mobs.

There was a beautiful bubbling spring with some great spots to sit in and cool off. We don’t have any cheeky crocodiles here, just freshies.

Cutting across a hill for home I was rewarded with a view of the valley. I couldn’t quite see my house but I could see the windsock on the airstrip. I never get tired of looking at the valley!

As I neared the sandy patch by Roasting Spot I found a nganabbarru resting in a wallow, and even though I knew he was young the stalk was on - don’t look a gift buffalo in the mouth during the wet season when you’ve got a hungry dog to feed. I photographed him and positioned myself by a tree sixty metres away. I tried to rattle the bolt up and down to get him to stand, but he ignored it, so I had to call-out. He stood alright, but so did a proper black old boy just forty metres away, whirling to face me, with magnificently blunted, battle-weary horns. I hate shooting young buffalo, and try to avoid it at all cost, so this sudden development was most welcome. Instantly my little Mauser .300H&H put the fine bead on his heart and sent the 220 grain Woodleigh FMJ on its merry way. He made twenty metres away before he had to brace himself to resist the inevitable collapse and a second FMJ to the chest put him straight down. It turns out there were two others, and they galloped away when they realised the old warrior wasn’t coming with them.

When I got home I learned that our dog had stopped my wife and mother-in-law from stepping on a huge whip snake. She sure earned her nganabbarru!

And here’s a final picture of an egret that watched me while I drank water during my stroll...

Wow, great pics and scenery! Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Awesome stuff! And great pics by the way

Great pics and love the green. Lovely area. Thanks for sharing.

Great report and buffalo. Just to think that it was almost on your door step so to speak. Most folks have to travel a long way to get an opportunity like that. I'll bet that gutting, skinning and butchering that big rascal would have been easier with a new Von Gruff knife or knife set. What size dog do you have that needs a buffalo to feed on?

Currently sitting in monochrome snow country and I appreciate that scenery very much.

What an adventure in your own backyard. That dog certainly earned his keep! :A Big Hello:

Thanks for sharing your outing with us.

Just this little sweetheart...

We rescued her, she used-to live wild on the hill behind our house in our previous community. She survived the dingoes and the camp dogs, living by her wits and speed. Her dewclaw nearly killed her, and we trapped her and operated, and then won her trust little by little.

Thanks for sharing your outing with us.

She saved us from a brown snake a few years ago as we walked to work one morning.

That is the kind of dog I'd like to have around. In human parlance you'd have to say she is "Street Smart" but very comfortable in her current surroundings. Do you have any idea how old she is? How much does she weigh? Does she help you hunt i.e. locate live or track downed game? She obviously knows what snakes are to be avoided.

Beautiful Pics thanks for sharing

Well done on the hunt .

I bet there's a few miles between each one when it's as green as it is in the backround.

Beautiful country! Nice hunting adventure!

Yep, pretty hard to find them at present. This wet season in that one little spot behind the house I’ve walked about sixteen kilometres total in four outings and encountered buffalo twice.

That looks like a wonderful time and the scenery there is gorgeous! Also, that is a beautiful old 300 H&H you have! Woodleighs have become some of my favorite bullets! (I am assuming thats what you used as it is in Australia and they make a wonderful 220 grain solid. Congratulations on a fine bull!

Hi ChrisG! Thank you. Yes, I am biased towards Woodleigh! The action is 1938 Oberndorf, but the rifle is an Australian-made custom completed in 2016 by Tony Small.

Ben,
Killing me here, can’t wait until August! Love your rifle

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
