This is the new arrow set-up for my upcoming Gemsbok horn primitive bare bow hunt in a couple of weeks time in the Limpopo Bushveld near Botswana.
I've decided on a little heavier broadhead this time for momentum/ penetration [quartering away] ,and hope the slow speed arrow and possible 'string jump' won't be that much of a factor at this very short distance.
Zwickey Delta 135gr with steel insert and a 500 gr arrow + feathers.
Total arrow weight about 660 - 680 gr
As it will be a sort of "primitive" hunt, it will take place solo and in the open bush by ambush at max 10m.
(I hope , but that is my own challenge on how to hunt with this unique bow this time!!)
For sure,the chances of encountering an alert herd of Impala at that close a range is very- very slim, but that is what it's all about!
I got lucky in the past with this primitive bow at short range....
This Zwickey 110 gr arrow went clean through this Impala ewe at short distance, and she died about 30-40 m away.
Maybe I can even trick a Warthog into ambush as well this time?
Variables like wind,vegetation,terrain etc,ect will only be assessed and chosen on location [no regular blind/hide area]
As always , it's all about this unique hunting experience ,and not the kill/blood.
The photo of the bone penetration capabilities of the Zwickey broadheads convinced me to use them again this time.
Now to start sharpening them while the instinctive shooting practice is ongoing!
Bow = 60pd
Draw= 20 inc
Speed [estimate] 170 f/sec
Well ,time will tell.....
[Will post a follow-up afterwards]
