Advice on first Dangerous Game rifle

Good evening @Scrumbag
Perhaps this article of mine may interest you ?
Long story short ; my personal favorite happens to be the .458 Winchester Magnum but a neophyte to the world of dangerous game hunting will do well to opt for a .375 H&H Magnum .

I used the 416 REm and the 404 Jefferys for years and could not tell any difference in the two on buffalo hippo, and I used the 450-400 double and it suited me...I used the .470 and 500 N>E. and decided they were just too damn heavy on those long trecks and slow to get back on targets ..

My favorite bullets were the North Fork cup points and Woodlieghs 450 gr. 40 caliber bullets..

Never felt a need for the bigger bores after a few kills, results were the same...A stopper is a plug that keeps water in a tub, good shooting with proper bullets to the brain or spine is what kills large animals pumped full of adreline in their tracks..

I hunt with 3 different rifles a Jeffery 404j. a Rigby 416.Rigby and a George Gibbs .470 Nitro.

I love the .416, but as the years are catching up with me I usually grab the Jeffery. Lighter in weight and felt recoil. Which I previously badly damaged shoulder appreciates. I think you can tell I very much like the .404J. If you can shoot a .375H&H, you can handle a .404j.

At the end of the day it is your money your choice. Eventually you will end up with one or the other and you will always wonder what the other was like.

Scrumbag and I had 404 Jeffs made by the same fella

I think he was a bit luckier than I - mine has been back for much work

Now with another gunsmith who has had to build up the feed lips using laser welding as too much had been taken off in the first place

When cycling, two rounds would stick up above the bolt - deadly for the operator in a DG scenario

I live in hope that it will be sorted

j

PS - you don't get that with a blaser :giggle:

The thread is old, and i think our forum member scrummy has chosen 404 jef in the meantime.

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
