My goodness I had to exercise a ton of self-control today! My local Scheel's had this preowned Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 270 with a beautiful walnut stock and in very good condition for just under six and a half bills. Based on my research of the serial number (35xxx), this appeared to be one manufactured by FN/Browning under license from Winchester/Olin Corp at their South Carolina plant sometime between 2007 - 2013 (before the production was relocated to Portugal). Everything looked great on this rifle except for a slight scuff on the schnabel forend and another slight ding in the wood underneath the pistol grip. I had to eventually pass because I've already got a couple of 270's that don't get enough use as it is, but man I sure was tempted! :)

Too much self control, should've bought it lol
Yeah; I really need to stop reading about them on the Internet, before I wind up going back to the store. :-). I already have an FN 1952 in 270 with an even nicer custom walnut stock (and a 24" barrel, my preferred length), so really hard to justify this one. They're just so damn sexy, though! :)

I had the exact rifle for several years until I sold it to a friend to shut him TFU! Still his hunting rifle for a lot of years. My wife has the same rifle in 280 and I stil have a 7x57. Better go back to the storwe.

Oh man, if this one had been in 7x57 (or something else mild like 243 or 308) I would have definitely brought it home (even though I already have three 7x57's). But since I already have this gorgeous FN 1952 in 270, I am struggling to justify this one. But, I may run back by there tomorrow and see if Fate has held it for me. ;-)

Why would you buy that clunker when you already have that beautiful rifle.
Ha ha ha ha ha

Just trying to discourage you. Now if it was a 35Whelen or 358 Norma Magnum I would say yes go for it.

My self-control lasted all of about 16 hours. Decided to go back to store, and if it was still there, then it was meant to be. ...and, she followed me home. :). I figure that it will either make a nice companion to my other 270; or if I decide to sell it, I will get back most or all of what I've got in it (perhaps more at the time).

I am so very glad you lost control lol..

I was about to head to Scheels in The Colony in hopes that it is your local and try to grab it if it was there lol..

I don't need another 270.. but sometimes it is hard to control the urge lol..

Yep; that is the Scheel's where I bought it. I think they are overall the best of the "big box" gun stores around. Only downside is that they won't negotiate on prices at all. I've gotten to know one of the gun room managers, and she told me that a used gun has to be on the rack for a year before they can lower the price any. Oh well, at least the two used guns I've bought from them were fairly priced to begin with.

Completely agree...

I used to be an ardent Cabelas shopper (one of their stores is literally a 1 mile walk from my house.. the city even put in a wooded walking trail that runs from the back end of my neighborhood that runs right past the place :) ).. But now will make the 15 minute drive over to The Colony 9 out of 10 times and shop at Scheels instead.. Better selection of quality products, typically better pricing, and I like the folks that work in the gun section a bit better as a rule as well..

I'll still hit the Cabelas on occasion when I just need something basic, or just have a few minutes to spare and want to pick something up...

But once the Scheels opened a few years ago.. Cabelas went from getting about 75% of my outdoors dollars each year to now maybe getting 10%.. Scheels gets probably 50%.. and I find myself shopping more and more online these days for the remaining 40...

My ratios might be right around the same. I don't know if Cabela's ever got 75% of my outdoor spend, but their share definitely dropped once Scheel's opened up in The Colony; particularly when it comes to actually buying guns. My ammo buying is probably 60-70% online, with the remaining 30-40% pretty evenly divided between Academy, Cabelas, and Scheel's.

Finally got out to the range today with this Model 70 Featherweight in 270 that I bought used a couple weeks ago; to sight in the Leupold Vari-X IIc 4-12X scope that I mounted. Here is the final group; using some off-the-shelf Remington 130gr Core Lokt's. It's not a bad group, and certainly ready to go hunting; but I think I can probably work up a load with some Hornady or Sierra 130gr. bullets and IMR 4350 that should put it closer to 1/2 MOA.

Try using H4831SC with th 130s. Mine used to get 3,140fps with Australian made ACPs and grouped a bit over an inch at 200 yards.
110gn Hornady VMax with 56.5gn of 2209/H4350 in Federal cases and Remington primers used to group 0.3 inches at 100 yards and was devastating on pigs upto about 80kg. This load proved safe in my rifle only. Start 5% lower and work up
Bob

I second Bob's recommendation of H4831SC. I used to use it with 130g Partitions, but got lazy now I only load 150g Partitions in my 270 (one load for all big game). I get just over 3000 fps in 2 different 270s (both BDLs, my sons and mine) and sub 1 inch groups. I also use CCI magnum rifle primers, probably not necessary.

I really like that knife you're selling. It looks so similar to my original 1306 that has been around a long time. I can't spend that much but if you get to a point where you'd entertain offers let me know. Thx, James
Been away for a while, glad to be back
