Does anyone know which round will give better velocities out of a 18" barrel with 250 grain bullets? It's hard finding velocity data for shorter barrels with these rounds.

Their velocity loss should essentially be the same with bullets that are the same weight, The .35 will have slightly better sectional density.

This is WAG, but I would figure that you would lose around 25-30 fps per inch of barrel lost. The larger the bore, the less the velocity lost per inch of barrel cut. YMMV

I have several .35 Whelens. Two of which are a 22 inch M700 and an 18.5 inch 7600 Carbine. With my favorite handload using 59.5 grains RL15 and 250 grain Nosler Partition I get 2540 FPS out of 22 inch and 2500 even out of 18.5 inch. So 40 FPS less with a 3.5 inch shorter barrel. The Whelen does very well in shorter barrels, I would assume the same of the 9.3x62.

Great info.. I bet that 2500 from a handgun is a “handful”. No pun intended. I’ve touched off a .375 JDJ and it’s no slouch.

@BlakeJ
The Whelen with 225s and 250s will put out run the 9.3 in any length barrel you choose but when you get up to 22275gn and above they are pretty much neck and neck
The above is proving you handload the Whelen to its FULL potential. Factory Whelen loads the 9.3 will be about the same.

@rocklok
Stoke those 250s up with 64.5gn of CFE 223 for 2,700 fps and go have fun. Might be a bit potent for the 7600 but would be fun in the 700.

I run the 250 's with 65.0 of CFE223 2650 out of my 9.3 in a Sauer, you will defiantly will notice it with a rifle that weights in at 8 pounds
@Hyde Hunter
You'll definitely notice it in the Whelen.
If you want some real fun try 319s in the Whelen at 2,455 fps.

I love the .35 Whelen. I own 4, and have killed the majority of my big game over the past 33 years with a Whelen. However, as much as it pains me to say it, the 9.3x62 will outperform it in equal barrel lengths from short to long when loaded equivalently in pressure. It has more case capacity ( roughly 6 grains H2O). The Whelen has the advantage of larger bullet selection, particuarly in lighter weights. I dont have a 9.3, I use a .375 H&H when I want to go bigger.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
