9.3x57

Ballistics are similar to the .358 Winchester cartridge. It is the 8 x 57 Mauser cartridge necked up to 9.3 mm(.366).

With the excellent SD(.307) of the 286 grain .366 bullet, you can near kill anything with it. The low velocity will limit your range though. 200 yards would probably be max.

It's not a "fashionable" cartridge, but suspect it is deadly, based on my experience with a couple of .356/.358 Winchesters and 250 grain bullets. I agree 200M is a sensible max range as IvW suggests.

Well, think about it. You're launching a .366 projectile, heavy-for-caliber at 286 grains, at the "magical" velocity of around 2100 f/s. And you're achieving this with very little pyrotechnics. Pace Mr. Frank Barnes, I place it a good notch above the .358 Win, purely based on the heavier bullet for which it was conceived. Good call in selecting this often-overlooked caliber.

Never had one but, I'll bet it will deliver the goods. I do know for a fact the .358 250 grain bullet at 2353 fps will swat down elk most permanently.;)

Cheers for the responses. Got everything squared away now, the rifle is at the gunsmith for threading, the suppressor is nearly ordered, and I have all the gear to load for her.
With BLC2 it's looking like a 270gr at 2200fos being relatively conservative.
Should do me for 90% of things, there is always Nosler if I need tougher.

It's here....

I have owned one too. A Husqvarna model 46. I used it on wild boar, moose and the much smaller roe deer. It performed beautifully. I shot the 286 gr Lapua Mega bullet. I have also owned its "big brother" the 9,3x62, and i would pick the x57 everyday for my hunting. Mild recoil and excellent performance on game. The longest shot I took was about 100 yard, most within 75 and it is truly deadly. I really miss it and it's a shame only Blaser makes barrels for it. I would love to get a barrel in the calibre for my mauser m03 but they only offers the 9,3x62.

Thanks for the reply. I really like it so far, as you say it has mild recoil and mine is more than accurate enough.
That's very interesting as I am going after a roe buck at the weekend. Currently running 270gr Speer at about 2200fps. I have some concerns about expansion (although it is a relatively soft bullet)but I tend to shoot a bit forward in to the shoulder a little anyway.
What placement did you use with the Mega's on roe? What sort of reaction to the shot did you get?

I'm running a x74 just picked some Nosler 286 DG heads to go with the matching Partitions just need a x62 in a bolt gun now to go with it Husqvarna do make some nice old rifles sure your gonna have fun with this one

The Mega is a tough bullet and the velocity isn't that great so I normally tried to shoot the deer centre on the shoulder, sometimes I got a lungshot. The result was very nice, heavy bullet going slow, is a nice recipe;)

I'm using the Prvi 286gr at 2260 fps in my 9.3x62. It's a tougher projectile than the Speer but won't be as tough as the Mega, it's also reasonably cheap.
I've only got one deer so far, but it went straight through the spine of a red stag at 97yds. I hit him right in the centre of the neck where it joins the chest.

Good to know, sounds like my shot placement should work well with the Speer. Thanks mate.

It's good to hear that you think the same as I do regards toughness. The Speer does seem to to be pretty soft, hopefully it'll perform as expected.
I have some copper 220gr to try at some point but they'll definitely be too tough for roe I should think.

Jimbob,
here a few dates from the BLUE BOOK from RWS, the German reloading bible.
In my country an unknown caliber ,but in Scandinavia not uncommon.

The old ist the bottom 0ne.

Condition is still good, but I more like wood than plastic..

Looks great for plastic. Sadly I think I have a different Husqvarna 46 to you, mine is one of the ones based on a small ring Swedish Mauser.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
Thanks,

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
