While killing a little time waiting for things to cool off I looked up some Toyota numbers.
1. According to Google Toyota makes and sells about 10million vehicles a year.

2. I looked at two different sources on 79 series Land Cruiser one says in 2019 they mfg. about 5,200.

3. The other source says in 2020 mfg. about 3,500.

Keep in mind I am talking about the bakkie only, not wagon/troopie or any of the other countless models. As you can see that is a fairly insignificant amount of vehicles.

As a Safari Operator we can purchase duty free which in Zim adds about $25,000 or so to the purchase price. I wish we had the money to purchase 1 or 2 more, but that is not going to happen.

From what I have observed of South Africa their is always a glut of used late model cruisers for sale, it seems that most have the v-8 petrol engine. Not desirable for us, but unless something changes this is sure going to leave a big dead space in the rugged hunting vehicle market. We will definitely be taking care of the ones that own now.

Theyre almost impossible to find in the US....

I priced one out with most of the options available about a month ago.. it was a little north of $90K US...

After I had two different dealers essentially tell me "you'll never get one... between the low inventory, chip shortage, and high demand.. its just not going to happen.... so.. how would you like a 4Runner?!?!?!" I stopped even considering a new LC as an option..

As someone who can speak with first hand experience, how is a Jihadi in a Land Cruiser more of a threat than one in a pickup, or a Pajero, or anything else that can cover ground? I suppose there are certain situations where an LC can get somewhere more effectively and reliably than other options... but... that would be the exception rather than the rule..

and since there are a metric ton more pajeros, hi-lux, etc available.. and they are lower profile... they are often much preferred over anything that will bring additional attention to the bad guy...

I've seen WAY more hi-lux converted into "technicals" than I have seen LC's converted as well (an overt/obvious weapon system as opposed to a low-profile one)..

and for low profile attacks.. the most common vehicle I have seen used in pretty much the entire African and ME theaters has been a "white toyota corrola"...

I dont have actual stats in front of me.. but I'd no shit estimate better than 50% of all VBIED's in Iraq and Afghanistan we're deployed in small toyota sedans... and a significant number of the small arms ambush style attacks from vehicles were from sedans and vans....

I have never had a LC roll up on myself or anyone that I know personally for ANY type of attack (although I am sure they have happened on occasion)...

I have however personally witnessed and/or know several people that were subjected to VBIED attacks from small sedans and small arms attacks from small SUV's (like Pajeros) and mini-vans like the HiAce.

And I've watched militia units in Iraq and in 2 different African countries use Hi-Lux EXTENSIVELY.. and have watched the Hi-Lux be used EXTENSIVELY by a variety of forces in Afghanistan (both friendly and unfriendly)... but never seen an LC be used in any of those locations for anything in an actual combat situation (by friendly or unfriendly forces)..

Again, I am certain that LC's would be loved/preferred by anyone that can get them over a hi-lux for certain applications.. and I am certain they have been used for bad actions by bad actors in many places..

But if Toyotas real intent is to keep their vehicles out of the hands of bad guys... they should consider discontinuing the hi-lux and the corolla... their use outweighs LC use by at least a 20:1 margin (I would guess the actual number is much higher than that)..

FWIW the vast majority of technical conversions Ive seen done by govt forces throughout central and west Africa have also been Hi-Lux.. While Im sure there are a few LC out there.. I have personally never seen one.. and I spent A LOT of time in less than stable countries throughout those two parts of Africa over a period of about 5 years.. and still have people working for me today in multiple central and west african countries that deal directly with govt forces (both police and military)..

Yep. Exactly what I was hearing. And their general advertising makes no mention of a follow-on. Would assume the industry rags would have better insight.

Maybe you should try Toyotas site, not magazines etc. As I have stated they say they will make 600 2022 for Australia.

Nobody is disputing the 600 Anniversaryodels but from what I could find the base models, poverty packs or commercial line will continue.

I don't think Toyota will stop production to stop them getting in the hands of terrorists.

Just look at what the US army left for them. They may have disabled some aircraft bit there was a lot of images showing equipment left when they withdrew.

Now in the hands of the Taliban. Even body armour gives them some advantage.

The way I heard it is for a lot jurisdictions there are 2 problems:

1) They are struggling making tightening emissions laws around the world
2) There are places where cars get ranked on how relatively safe it is to get hit as a pedestrian

Understood, but people either misinterpret or "Believe" things.

True story, a few years ago the rumour got around in Australia that the LandCruiser would not be available.

A State Government department of NSW National Parks believed this and started to look for a replacement. I know they did in fact but a couple of vehicles and set them up for fire vehicles for assessment.

Someone believed the Cruiser was gone. They have numerous Cruisers across the state. I was working for them and had one for my position.

I've been speaking with a Toyota dealer today. There is a backlog on orders but they are still making them and to their knowledge will continue to make them for Australia and other countries where they meet emmission controls etc .
