Why do people reload big bores using the two fingers on the bolt as aposed to the palm?
Not knowing any better. It's not like there are a lot of classes or instruction manuals floating around on the use of bolt action rifles. And if there were any classes, it is likely that in Europe/US the instructor would not know any better either.

I only heard about the palm technique being superior to the index finger technique, on this very forum. It took me a lot (like really a lot, and I still do regress from time to time) of dry fire to change this up. The biggest help actually was that the bolt handle's on two of my Mauser actions, are quite short and/or very stiff to operate. Meaning that when using an index finger and thumb technique, I often slip off the bolt handle.

This would actually be a great opportunity for a good writer. Perhaps together with one of the African big bore associations, to create a full training manual on the use of bolt action and double rifles for dangerous game. What to look for in the rifle, how to operate it proficiently (and why), setting up of training exercises (dry and live fire), accoutrements, etc.

Dorleac&Dorleac has been having some successes with AH members this year!

I have an original factory A-Square rifle in 500 A-Square, the cartridge Art Albin developed after some disappointing results in Africa using the then ubiquitous 458 Win Mag. Alpin based the cartridge on the 460 WB case necked up. In fact, it is quite easy make 500 ASq brass from 460 - trust me I have done so, since original A-Sq brass is quite rare. The 500 ASq will definitely out perform the 500J. Alpin's bible "Any Shot You Want," shows his 600gr A-Square Dead Toughs at 2500+ in front of 117g of 4064 - I have not personally tried that load (yet + 570 bullets are easier to come by). However, I shoot mostly reduced loads with 5744, as I do with all of my "big boys" including my 600NE double. "Any Shot You Want" should be in every big gun shooter's library. A-Square used mainly reworked 1914 or 1917 Enfields. Mine is a 1914 version and was never altered to cock on the open; rather on the close. The 577 T-Rexs are getting out of control price wise as noted elsewhere on AH. Consequently, I have 585 Nyati in the works using a highly modified Remington 1917 action with a McGowan barrel.

Someone from Blaser told me they do not recommend thumbhole stocks for anything over 375 due to discomfort caused to the hand by high recoil with such stock. I have the thumbhole version with 375 and feel no discomfort at all but 416 or 458 is a fair bit more potent.
I recently sold a custom 458 Win Mag on a Mauser action with a thumbhole style stock and open sights. Very, very comfortable shooter.

Sako - no problems what so ever but I only use Sako up to 338 just in case etc
Medium mounted scopes in large calibers would solve the problem

I shot a .500 A2 once with 700 grain hc ,it was quite good, A2 Hannibal magnaported. But boy the muzzle gasses made a distinct " V" out of it, easy to build on other actions, and cost effective.

I was prompted to research the 500 A2 again, this am. I believe there was a custom 4 sale here @ One Time.
As an enthusiast, The 585's also had a place of interest @ one time. There was 585 "AHR" for sale, I contacted Wayne, AHR no longer made the Brass & the seller had the only remaining 100 pieces.
I also see 585 GMA rifles for sale (perhaps 585 GMA Express)? .. 585 Nyati & or 585 Hubbel?

Is there subtle differences in any of these 585's?
Thank you.

Case length and I think shoulder placement.

This was my Custom Winchester 70 (Grizzinator) A all Stainless that I had custom built for a Alaskan Brown Bear Hunt..
Laminated Stock...16" Barrel with custom Quarter rib and banded front sight..Control feed...Matching Leupold 1-5 with QD rings..6.5 pds plus scope and about 36" oal!
I decided to take it to Africa with my 600 and 4 bore double...ended up taking 2 Buffalo with it and a month or so later to AK for a decent Brownie....Really was a sweet lil rig.

Hi Joshlee0518 (please let me know if you are fine being addressed like that),

Thought I would drop you a PM. It is super exciting to plan a hunt and we are more than happy to assist you. Have you given any thought yet to which species you would like to take?

What do you hunt usually and which weapons/calibers are you using?

Look forward to swapping experiences and ideas.

Happy hunting - Daniel

Is this rifle sold? If not what is the weight of it and do you know if there is enough difference in diameter between the 35W and the 9.3 to allow for a rebore to a 9.3x62 which is what I am after?
Thanks,
Gary (Just down the road in Springfield)
