Hi folks,

has anyone used 180 / 225 Barnes or Peregrine bullets in a 44 mag lever action? Anyone care to share results or loads?

Thanks in advance,

Scrummy

I haven't shot those particular loads when I had my various .44 carbines. I had a 1894 Winchester Trapper that would sling 310 grain bullets at 1,350 for punching deer so I never used anything else.

I would have to think that at the speed those barnes or peregrines would be flying from a 16-20 inch barrel, you are definitely going to get some expansion. But I guess the question would be... has anyone on here used them in a muzzeloader? That's a pretty common load for a .50 cal shooting .429 sabots.

A muzzleloader and a .44 mag rifle are going to be shooting them around the same speeds. So if they work in one, they should work great in the other.

Very good point, thank you!

I think I might order some 200 and 225 gr XPB and see if I can chrono them.

Anyone got any idea of impact velocities the barnes work at?

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
